Changing Tides

Listen to the man because he is always right
Don’t you dare talk back or put up a fight
Hear his voice and hear him out
But you little woman have no voice…even if you shout
Sit on the floor and serve me please
Then bath, clothe and feed the kids
Keep the house in order and family in line
Thank you for that my dutiful wife
I, the man, big and strong
Will provide for my family come summer or storm
I will head and protect them because that’s how it is
It’s the status quo; she listens and I lead
However, we are finding out that change is inevitable
And this time the tables are turning on our culture, roles and people
Globalisation, westernisation and human rights
Has put our archaic norms in a losing fight
My children and I now have different meanings of life
And our beliefs and values are no longer in line
The winds of reform are definitely in our homes
Where it will take us…nobody knows.

Material Love

Love for a person & love for a being
Is now nothing compared to love for things
A pair of shoes for a boy
I'll sacrifice love for a toy
This materialistic world in which we live
Is turning out to be a well-disguised thief
Robbing us of happiness we once found in simplicity
And replacing it with insatiable needs that are rife with complexities
No more 'I love yous' in exchange for 'Do you love me?'
Now its I love you because you can give me something shiny, new & fancy
Many friends walking down the aisle
It's a happy day; they're the glowing bride!
But nobody can see the tear within
The one that signifies a fragmented win
The tear that holds the true love sacrificed
In order to live a life that is relatively nice
Having it all was what we searched for in a character
But now owning it all seems to be the better
They say life is a wheel that keeps revolving
I pray for the day the priority arrow turns back to the love of beings
Over the love of things.

From Rock Bottom

If you hit rock bottom oh don't cry
Stop & look around; try focus on the sky
Yes little darling wake that 'you' in your heart
The one that will tell you: 'The only way left is up'
I hope you shut out the taunts of the world
That you find warmth in this war with the bitter cold
I pray that you realize how the world works
That its important to value the fact that you come first
I won't lie to you & tell you it'll be easy
Because it will be hard, oh yes, you will get busy
You'll stumble & fall & stumble again
You'll cry & question when it will all end
Visualize the prize and the glorious finish line
Be patient with the talkers, the world and time
One day soon you'll reap what you sow
Then my friend you will truly know
The beauty of rising from rock bottom
Knowing you stood up again, spoke up...you showed 'em!

Alone

Alone
Alone in a world thats always on my case
No time to breathe in this never ending race
I reach out my hands in sheer desperation
Not one soul notices in this over populated nation
Alone
Lord I've been good, I help when I can
Now I'm in need but I'm in sinking sand
Not even a rope or a much needed life line
No helping hand, neither a penny nor a dime
Alone
Have I been lying to myself all this time?
Were all my good deeds just a lie?
To give and to receive seems like a myth to me
And where is this good natured human that I have yet to see?
Alone
No more karma or just world beliefs
Because success transpires only for the selfish
I give up on this inter-dependence nonsense
Today, I live for me friends
Alone...not lonely

Catching Smoke

I lost you a long time ago
That explains this to and fro
Your heart was never mine to begin with
This is why I'm going to leave
One foot in and the other out
I knew it but I hid my doubts
At the start I kept my joy in a little box
Then you told me to show you everything I've got
The box opened with such character
You decided that that wasn't what you were after
I fought to perfect what was once set in gold
I cried to keep whatever I could hold
I got on my knees a couple of times
But nothing could ever make you mine
I lost you when I got you
That is the sad and obvious truth

Contained

Stuck inside this tiny old box
I can hardly breathe
Its been years since I tasted freedom
I'm living but haven't lived
Days go by with no one noticing me in my box
I exist not even knowing that this is unorthodox

Mind Storms

It didn't happen
You didn't say that
Block it all out
It will go away
Remain still
Be quiet
Tighter...tighter
Lock those thoughts tightly in place
They're fighting...fighting
Trying to come out
I can control it
I can't control it
One outburst
Another one
Lock them in...try harder
More outbursts
Fire with fire
Don't fight it
Embrace it
The golden mean
I need to find it
Control...control
Find the golden mean

Time and I

I wait in desperation for time's turn
To kindly ensure that lessons are learnt
Oh time please tell me
Will the prize be worth all the hurt?
A heart twisted tightly to the core
A soul yearning for more
Time please show me what to do
How does it end? Will I pull through?
Time can you hear me?
Can you feel my hurt?
Time can you answer me?
Time?
