Fruit Leather

You bite that apple!
Give it a go, put on a show
There is no shame
You said shame is a sham
And clams are happy
Do they hop or skip?
Tripping along the seafloor
Playing hopscotch
Eating numbers like cookies
Chips Ahoy!
Sleeve after sleeve
One arm at a time
Your hands on my clock
Move a little too fast
But I like the whiplash
Goodbye bad reviews
Goodbye balding backlash
Don’t forget to pump your gas
You’ll need that later
It’s a surprise!
Happy little accidents
Like birthdays spent in jail
Mail with the wrong address
Bumper stickers on my bosom
Peach blossoms assaulting
And salting slugs
Digging a pit
With a single blackberry
Chairs made of cherrywood
And cedar
Dressed as a Caesar salad
With croutons on the side
At the request of Brutus
Who now makes boomerangs
And yells
“Fling!”
But he put my arm in a sling
Made of fruit leather
Do you find that
Hard to swallow?
I asked about Peter’s cottontail
And instead, I was gifted
A lucky rabbit’s foot
Dipped in grape juice
The foot was stuck in a fence
In my defense, I bargained
With the spaghetti gods
To let it run free
But it wouldn’t run to me
So I skipped away slowly
And found a pond
Made of citrus potions
I drew a huge breath in
“Aaaahhhhh…”
A loser of a lemon
A melon of a car
I swear the spokes
Never spoke to me
But my cousin’s husband
Swore his muffler
Muttered something strange
“Give that dog a bone!”
Strange because he
Didn’t have a dog
Or a cat, or a fish,
Or a parakeet
He had an iguana
Named Juno the Prince
Such regality
To that lizardman
That dino who lived
Within a miniature desert
The sand was choco dust
And the solitary rock
Was always the place to be
I preferred to live
In peach pits
Without the flesh and fuzz
You used to be fresh
And fruity-tooty
Like applejacks and
Lime jello from the pack
Someone said you’d gone sour
So I had to taste for myself
When I tried to bite into you
I turned into a termite
What would you know about that?
I told you
“You’re barking up the wrong tree.”
Of course the oak
Didn’t have the maple sauce
Or the apricot jelly
It did have a carving
The letters “F” and “U”
Carved skillfully together
I just ate that up
All of the romance
The lovey-dovey
Heart to heart
Tasted like pomegranate
Seeds stuck in my teeth
I always liked spitting
How far?
To the moon and back
I chewed up the stars
To feel the fizzle
It didn’t phase me
When I got burned
Because pineapple is better
With a char on the grill
I gave you
A housewarming plant
A crunchy cactus
Whose spines were slippery
Slick with silver
And slivers of steel
Did you want to steal me away?
Just don’t tip the cows
Unless it’s above twenty percent
And look at you go
Man, you are really milking this
Save some milkweed
For the monarchs
Charles might need it
You could run to him
The perfect pear
Food for fuel?
I guess you could try
You bite that apple!

The Scent of Vanilla

Cooking with garlic and oil
Chopping peppers and chives
Crinkling aluminum foil
Running water over dirtied knives

Cutting boards strawberry stained
Slicing apples and poaching pears
Steamy facials from pasta drained
Sizzling pops like lightning flares

Piping a French buttercream rosette
Cracking eggs with no loose shell
Waiting for lime jello to set
But nothing beats the most delicious smell

The scent of vanilla

Laugh Medicine

Land of laughs and cackles
An amusement park built to lighten any mood
Freed shackles

Falling down slopes
Chewing on bites of funny food
Lift hopes

You see
Life is not rude
Whee!

Land of laughs and cackles
Chewing on bites of funny food
Whee!

Ethereal

Effortless waves of radiance cast on toward the abyss,
Tethered between worlds of light and dark, of despair and
Hope; An inherent need to become sentient in an age where
Everyone has become married to the digital. A beauty that is
Real and solid, yet weightless as a sparrow’s feather.
Entering a peaceful stillness born from nature, whose
Artistry is evident within the strength of thirsty roots; the
Letters and codes of the universe lay dormant in fallen rain.

Finding Light

The stars do shine and twinkle A glimmer and gleam of hope But the pollution has taken over The obnoxious smog has grown far too strong My eyes cannot find the light anymore So I’ll dust off my glasses And hunt for a telescope Rummage through the aged cedar chest ‘til dawn Poke, prod, and search to find that instrument If it will return luminosity The dark only depresses And I have sunken too low The bleakness of the void will escalate Unless I discover the glow again I worry about what else I might find I have made it my mission To ignore the surprises And focus instead on that which I know Will cast me higher into redemption From a cruel world that has forgotten When I attain the object I will never let it fade

Golden Shovel

Battery percentage drained to fifty
Discomfort over exposed mattress springs
Deposits into local banks are
Hard to come by with little
Hope for a hot meal and a stable room
Hours spent searching about
Sorting and sifting for loose change and the
Will to travel to the winter woodlands
Where my hope that you and I
Could be together will
Forever sleep in my heart and go
On to grow, to flourish, to
Wash over the sweeping sadness you see
Wiping tears from eyes and tossing them on the
Ground, next to the dull pit of a cherry
Left behind like the laundry that hung
On the drooping clothesline with
Frostbitten pins and forgotten drops of snow

(Inspiration from A.E. Housman's "Loveliest of Trees")

Popping Olives

He plucks a pear from the tree and tosses it my way. Hands fumble, but nails sink into flesh to maintain a solid grip. He doesn't see me slip. Examine the freshness of the fruit before sinking teeth through skin. Open the lid. A woven picnic basket with delights inside. Turkey and tomato sandwiches, crusts removed. Freshly baked blueberry scones and sour apple jam. Camembert and olives stuffed with pimento. Put the pear aside. Less interesting now than it used to be. He plucks another. Not for me. And joins me on the maroon checkered blanket. Popping olive after olive down his gullet. The unthinkable. Guzzling brine like some sort of animal. A subtle frown, equal parts disdain, and disgust. Nothing more can be discussed, as he continues to chug. Slip into a smile. Unthinkable, but thought of. Stuffed with poison and pimento. Chugs, then chokes. Trying to spit out the pit, begging. I bid him goodbye.

Say Something

Shards of ice
Stuck in throat
Burning sideways
Bitter char
Need to speak
Nothing rises

The Long Hike

Peril lives in free
An injustice made to see
Mangled maple tree

Of Lollipops

Of lollipops that taste sour, I dream of
Streetlights that flicker and fall, I
Dream of descending down a familiar
Path, I dream of glittering rubies;
I dream of whispering words washing
Over me, I dream of snowy cliffs
With people at the bottom, I dream
Of serpents with ill intent, I dream of
Darts and arrows rushing by, I
Dream of harvesting an unknown
Crop, I dream of echoing melodies;
I dream of lemon suns and blades of
Spinach grass, I dream of panic
That is pink and poisonous, I dream
Of letters dipped in kerosene, I dream of
A pantaloon with moth holes, I
Dream of rowing a boat with banana
Leaves, I dream of skipping down the lane;
I dream of leg cramps that prevent
Moving forward, I dream of fluorescent
Pools of chlorine and nicotine, I dream
Of pennies in the cushions, I dream of
Crochet blankets to keep us warm, I
Dream of betting it all at a shady
Casino, I dream of floral nightgowns;
I dream of soaring on the wings of
A phoenix, I dream of library shelves
With the helpful ladders, I dream
