Although this poem has been revised a couple times since age 16, I kept most of it’s content the sam; but was able to express the feelings the 16 year old “me” better in its revisions overtime. But there will never be enough time to express all of the love and appreciation I feel for my precious mother. I was 16 years old, and it was her 40th birthday July 2, 1976. And unbeknownst to me, she kept it. The fact that she loved and cherished it, made me cherish realizing that I was a poet then and from then on. I just wanted her to know how amazing she was as a Mom, not just raising the six of us her children independently, but because she was truly an Independence Day icon with a birthday just two days before the Fourth of July! I had nothing to give, but I could at least give her a poem from my heart and soul.

GOLDEN SAND Written July 2, 1976 For My Mother’s 40th Birthday, Revised and Given Again on Her 75th Birthday. As our country’s Independence, is now celebrated anew, You are my timeless Bicentennial Bell, my red, white, and blue. You’ve given me so very much, I desire so much for you, But like a hand fist full of golden sand, time is spilling through, We celebrate you as well today, taking care of us with all you know. Providing for us all that we need, so that we can grow. So fine, so precious, the priceless demand, is this seeping time of golden sand. Though each day my love continues to grow, for as long as I can live, The prayers of my heart, you may never know, my heart to you I give. If time or distance removed, you from my embrace, nothing could ever remove the loving memory, of your precious face. My golden sand of precious time, of the years God’s Grace refills, Mounting love overtime that continues to greatly spill. And for the promise of eternity our Heavenly Father gives, My only peace is because of eternal life, forever you will live. We only have a lifetime of golden sand each day, Like sand in an hourglass, time is just spilling away, Much more in heart, than in hand, A love forever precious as golden sand.
