The Arts Association with Math and Science

   Dear  Soupers, please give your thoughts on this matter.

1.    
Doyou think that the United  States has fallen behind in Math and Science because most  Arts programs have disappeared from most school curriculum?

2.    
Do you believe that Arts is  necessary to understand mathematical and scientific
concepts, and should be  treated as compulsory subject?

I hold that the Math, and Science problems fall with our society's failing... It always has to be instant gratification or nothing... It takes a spark of imagination to be willing to follow any of these... which no one does. And the Science, Math, and Engineering jobs are farmed out to immigrants instead of hiring experienced Americans. Why go to school for something if the jobs are given to outsiders. When experienced Engineers were laid off a few years back... They had to go to call centers to find work... While immigrants were brought into fill the empty slots. Most people don't even know this is being done... Why get a degree when you are pushed out of the jobs when you get it?

Hi Christine I agree with Craig it seems as though the teachers may be the root cause for such a failure and the silly notion that children shouldn't excel and make others feel inferior. I think a balance of all subjects is ideal. I have heard we use different sides of the brain for art and math so perhaps in order to maintain a balance of equal development of the brain both arts and sciences are needed. The bottom line is that if an individual is motivated to learn they will no matter the obstacles. SuZ

Thanks for the link:Christine. I will check it out. I have an excellent booklet titled,"Science&Human Values." by J Bronowski and he ties them together with A quote.

I do not know if the arts has any bearing on maths and science, maybe it does in some ways. I do think the arts should be a compulsory subject though. As for the standards, is there any actual proof they have dropped, we are all aware standards across the globe have risen greatly over the last decade. Perhaps the US needs to raise its game.
