Imagination or Experience?

Which poems are more convincing? Those written from true life experience or
those written from imagination?

I believe it's the gift of imagination, that allows people to transcend words and emotions, to see the essence, and describe it in their own thoughts and feelings, that uniquely exist because of their life experience. Both are needed to write about any subject

I think most of my narrative and free verse poems come from some real life experience I've had.....although perhaps at times enhanced by imagination. However, many of my poems written in a more constricted form, are most often fictional. My best poems I think have some sort of authenticity to bring the emotions into the words.

I think its "Inspiration" for me whether that's Imagination Experience or a combination of both. I lost my wife 11 months ago so I write usually of that pain but I sometimes get inspired by a contest or an incident that brings my imagination somewhere else. I hope to write more joyous poems but I know there is still a lot of releasing of pain for me. I think a good poet can probably write just as good even if they havent experienced the true story,but the person who experienced certainly has an edge, a depth of emotion that comes from a knowing heart. Also I think it all depends on the talent of either poet. Just my 2 cents : )

I like this kind of topic. When I started out in 2000, my kids had just left the nest and I found myself writing all about myself and my life in poetry but I fear I bored my family terribly with all the long rhymed poems I was doing. I took a class and learned to do poems in forms (making them more succinct) and also applying my experiences to general topics that would be more universally appealing. Using imagination and taking what we know and making more out of it, I think it's all part of a poet's growth process. Just writing and writing and letting your mind go. You can go so many places. The possibilities are endless!!

“I found myself writing all about myself and my life in poetry but I fear I bored my family terribly with all the long rhymed poems I was doing.” What do you mean? Isn’t rhyme a form of poem? What if you have the gift of writing rhyme? Some people are good at writing certain forms of poetry and if that particular form works well for them I believe that they should stick that form with the possibility of exploring other forms. Furthermore, poems written in the first person narrative sometimes transmit stronger emotions; what is wrong about writing about you? People want to hear about you.

When I started doing poetry it was from the heart and based on true experiences. Now I am trying to lighten up and do more fun poetry. Everyone here is very helpful and I love reading other peoples work because it inspires me. Dreams come into the picture too. Betty

Interesting question, Christine; I write from both so it helps to have a lot of experiences to draw from. I also have a lot of passions. I am curious about every area of life and mystery and words themselves...just exploring where they will take me or what thoughts they trigger opens amazing vistas. I read an interesting thing that Jean Cocteau said "Poets untie writing and then tie it up again differently." Good subject and I will be looking forward to reading all the responses. SuZ
