Immortality

As I was out riding on the south forty bluff,
I got down off my horse because I’d had enough.
It seems that even out here where you’re far from cares,
Things creep into your mind and catch you in life’s snares.
 
And as you marvel at those mountains rising high,
You can’t help but bring up questions as to just why
We’re put upon earth to live out our sorry tale—
Why we just keep going when we know all things fail.
 
You think there must be purpose to our existence
And to all the others that have come and gone since—
Is it to touch others with deeds and poetry?
Just what is the meaning of immortality?
 
Then another horse rides up with your only son,
And his smiling face tells you your doubts are now done—
For in all the seeds you cast there becomes a whole
That carries on your past and your immortal soul.

Funny how we always seem to need to look outward to find our lives, when it is right be our side all along. This was a nice poem. ~ I am from near some of the places you named in your bio. Lived in Topeka, and worked for 3 years at Hallmark Cards, KCMO. ~J~

When you look back and remember all those who have touched our lives and ponder all that has happened in our lifetime, no matter how trying some times have been, there is a feeling that cannot be described. Wonderful poem. Vince
