<P><FONT size=4>Attempting to broaden or share an aspect of ones paradigm,&nbsp;belief system&nbsp;or knowledge base with other individual is, largely, an act of futility. Learning and exchanging any given idea or portion of understanding is substantially hampered by the limitations of our current means of communication. Words and gestures are limited to interpretation by the five senses and those interpretations will vary greatly from person to person. Truth can only be experienced. Once we attempt an explanation, it is reduced to the imperfections of our understanding, communication skills. In a nutshell, one person’s truth is another person’s bull----.</FONT></P> <P><FONT size=4>Legitimate information may as well be a pack of lies and misinformation, if not conveyed to the satisfaction of the individual indulging it. It only becomes truth when the interpreter believes it to be.</FONT></P> <P><FONT size=4>Thus,&nbsp;there&nbsp;are times when a charismatic personality or a particularly revealing experience will readily filter into the understanding as an epiphany or extraordinary realization. </FONT></P> <P><FONT size=4>A work of art; a poem, a painting, sculpture, sketch etc. seems to&nbsp;more&nbsp;closely&nbsp;convey truth because it is experienced by the reader,&nbsp;or viewer,</FONT><FONT size=4> as the case may be.&nbsp;Experience trumps secondhand&nbsp;interpretation every time.</FONT></P> <P><FONT size=4>I wonder if this is because it involves a creative act, or a time when we are more closely performing the function we are here to do?</FONT></P>

Much to think about here. Yes, the arts truly are experience. That's what makes them such and important aspect of like. Karen

Billy Holliday has a great song called, "Don't Explain"... smile ... which kind of sums up my inability to write a response to this fascinating blog without sounding argumentative or defensive ... LOL ... Are all my years of experience only in "performing the function we are here to do" ... which is? Perhaps, to tell my truth? ... or be subsumed in the truth of others? ... hmmm ... great blog here, Jim !!

Thought provoking blog this morning, Jim. So true, art, or poetry finds the truth within each of us, I think the experience each of us has while viewing or reading, is so personal, that we will find different elements within a work, and mold it to fit our own need, or desire. I have found this true when writing my poetry. Often the reader will intepret it completely differently than I had intended it to be....but that pleases me to know they saw something else within it.Perhaps something they wanted or needed to see ~ Carrie

Excellent blog! So much truth in your writing. I really enjoy reading your blogs. They are very insightful. I find myself looking deeper into my own soul after reading your writing so that I may find deeper meaning and purpose in my life and my art, no matter the form. Thanks for sharing. ~Smiles from Lolita

I feel art and writing are sisters.. both can be viewed and each viewer may see something different...

I believe we can respond to a good poem, or any work of art - because it slips us in between the words, in between the brushstrokes of paint, or notes of a piece, to the Truth. We respond and understand because it's a transcendence of the trappings of high falutin' words or precise technique.
