So Long Sweet Summer
The sun bids goodnight
to the wide Texas sky,
and welcomes the twinkling stars.
When through the cottonwood trees
comes a crisp autumn breeze,
a refreshing delight spread afar.
So long sweet summer,
its time to cool down
the passionate flame,
like the leaves on the ground.
They once were so lively
as the blossomed on high,
but they had their prime,
and now they lay down and die.
But they always return
as do I to you,
after the winter,
when the coldness is through.
