Heart of a Poet

It jumps not to the thought of riches or the prospect of gold
For common treasures are not what it seeks
But rather it responds to that probable possibility
That it may have touched the depths of someone else's soul

It hearkens not to sparkling gems or lusts after a lifetime of wealth
For inside jewels lies the hearts of thieves
But rather it stirs at giving a word someone needs
For inspiration to even the smallest person is a diamond in itself

It doesn't ache for dollar bills or lurch at the sight of green
For nowadays money comes in many different forms
But rather it longs to patch up another heart that may have been torn
And once again to give that person's life meaning

It is a place where the world dare not or otherwise cannot go
A safe haven for valuables other than currency
A hidden trail where treasure means finding creativity
A path that only the hearts of poets know

If Things Were Different

If I weren't a poet, what would I be
An artist, a singer, or a designer?
Would I have been something next to a deity?
Oh, I couldn't imagine anything finer!

If I weren't loved, how bitter would I be in the present time
A little, a lot, more than I could ever devise?
Would I long for affection that I predict will never be mine
Or would I think love will take me by surprise?

If I were born earlier, what period would I have occupied
The forties, the fifties, or the sixties?
Would my name have lived on after I died
Or would there be no one alive who'd miss me?

If I weren't me, who would I be
And who would take my place?
Would I have had a different destiny?
I hope to God that wouldn't have been the case

I love the person I am today,
I love the person I am to become
I would not want it any other way
Many lives I could've lived, but thank God He chose this one

A Soldier's Prayer

Dear Lord,
I know you have business all over the world, so I'll make this very brief
If it's not your will for us to prevail, then my life I pray you keep
It's not that I'm a selfish person, but I live in constant fear
In a place where if you scream inside, there's no one there to hear
I want to see my lovely wife, for she's a part of me
Everywhere that she wants to go is somewhere I want to be
I want to see my children, for they're little angels of mine
And I think it's fair and only fair for them to see me one last time
I want to be reunited with friends, so spare me if you will
Don't fault me for my wrongdoings, it"s to be killed or to kill
I have to go so hear me now and spare me one more day
And let me live a happy life, for I wish not to perish this way

That Old Yet Rarely Used Path

Many times I’ve longed to give up when tribulations did corrupt my life when I was
young
But then you told me I would be unworthy of your only son

So from that day on I traveled along that old yet rarely used path
And I was surprised to see that for centuries, people started out here then
suddenly turned back

And by and by I began to understand why they left this dark and perilous road
For what lies ahead, more problems more dread, was only for God to know
Yes the path is scary but I need not tarry, for I desire to see what’s in store for me
And as I look about, I see the many mouths of the wolves snapping at my feet
It was a horrific sound, but I stood my ground just as Jesus told me I should
They gnashed their teeth and their eyes burned holes through me, yet they dared
not move an inch from where they stood
It didn’t dawn on me what held fast their feet until I felt the presence of his
comforting rod
And before I was overcome with fear, He whispered in my ear saying I am your
protection and your Lord your God

And on and on as I travel along that old yet rarely used path
Many years the Devil hath preyed on my fears and tempted me to turn around and
go back

He told me how silly I was to fall so many times and still haven’t had enough
And I said take thee leave for I know that surely God only count those times I got
up
I had passed many tests with complaints from the flesh, which time and time I
had to abate
But I had made a vow and no matter how or what I had to do, that promise I will
not break
I told you Lord that I will give of me wholeheartedly and accept my persecution for
your name’s sake
And though at times I may cry my steadfast spirit will not die as long as I know
you’re worth the wait
And while I wait for that day I’ll offer up my praise just as the trees and the
mountains do
And with your help I will forsake myself to take up my cross to follow you
And I will continue your way until I hear you say that I am to be no more
For I’ve pleased the Lord’s son for having done what I was indeed brought here
for
Until you appear and take up your dear ones to the King’s dwelling place
I’ll tell those with ears to repent for the judgment is near as I ponder when I will
see your face

And on and on I will continue to travel along that old yet rarely used path
And though I may not know where my feet are to go, as long as you’re leading
me, I’ll never turn back

Untimely Death

It came to me that night to take me to its home
But indeed it appeared just a little too late
For when it showed up, I had already packed and gone
And I had previously arrived at its place

The Beginning of An Ending

Do not grieve for my passing, for it was my time
For life is but the Lord's property, and now he has reclaimed mine
I regret leaving you here, though I've indeed been set free
But I could no longer ignore God's call for me
Though I went with Him, I made sure to take you along
And I left with you memories of times past but definitely not gone
I go home to my father in a place of peace
To be reunited with sisters and brothers, a whole line of family
Cry if you must, mourn if you may
But not over things you failed to say
Death is not eternity, it was a short bridge I had to cross
And though I have departed from this world, my life is not lost
I say farewell to you now, for it is a temporary goodbye
For one day you too will go where I now arrive
Someday in the future we will cross paths again
And together we will travel that long road, and there speak of the end

Aftermath

Blowing out the light of another had the same effect on mine
For nothing could deter my mind away from that gruesome thought
Coming home brought me closer to what I wished to leave behind
Funny how something can worth less than what it actually cost

I was sickened by the act I had committed
Though the deed was done with the purest intent
My return home added to my disgust though I refused to admit it
To the smiling faces who thought me to be Godsent

My loved ones was overjoyed that all was well with me
A thankful gleam in their eyes as they led me to the house
But all I could seem to think about was that other family
Lighting hundreds of candles for the one I had helped burn out

It was at that celebration held in honor of me that night
That I finally found what I sought upon going to war
To see people praising me for what they concluded was right
Is the very reason we will never achieve what we so dilligently fight for

We are convinced threats to our safety lies in foreign countries
Which is by far a misguided assumption in itself
For in order to rid the world of terrorism in its entirety
Is to collectively discard the half of one's own self

It was a harsh realization as a matter of fact
And one that I hoped had not come so late
But there was no way I could ever give back
The very thing my duty left me feeling inclined to take

My epiphony weighed every bit of heavy on the mind
So I bowed my head to the floor stained with dirt
And I silently prayed that the healing powers of time
Would someday mend the hearts of those I knew I had hurt

I asked forgiveness for the lot of the world
For my unjust actions and my many sins
But specifically from that little boy or little girl
Who wishes daily for their parent to come home again

A tear slid down my wind whipped cheek
At knowing that the satisfaction I so long ago sought
Would not grant my consciene the peace it so desperately need
A lesson that took ages to prepare but in a heartbeat was taught

My soul had grown weary of the evening and it showed on my face
So I bid farewell to the guest as I took my leave
And I went where war was more suitable to take place
To my empty house where I was left only with my memories

Holiday Wishes

All I want for Christmas is what I want every year
Not presents, not a card, not a crisp white tree
But just for my family to be here
And to spend a little time with me

All I hope for the holidays is what I hope for in many instances
Not riches, not to own a mansion or an expensive car
But just for loved ones all across the world to put aside their differences
And to be happy with whatever they have and wherever they are

All I wish for this year is what I wish for me and everybody's lives
Not to be understood, not to be number one or the smartest girl
But just for that person who is contemplating suicide
To know that they have a purpose in this world

All I ask for is simple indeed, but simplicity is everything it can never be
Truth is, the chances for my being President is higher than seeing these wishes
happening

A Message From Empowerment

I will make your will as strong as bamboo,
So tough your foes will hesitate to face you

I will make you as resilient as the Wall of China
But first of all, I must break you
