A Soldier's Prayer

Dear Lord,
I know you have business all over the world, so I'll make this very brief
If it's not your will for us to prevail, then my life I pray you keep
It's not that I'm a selfish person, but I live in constant fear
In a place where if you scream inside, there's no one there to hear
I want to see my lovely wife, for she's a part of me
Everywhere that she wants to go is somewhere I want to be
I want to see my children, for they're little angels of mine
And I think it's fair and only fair for them to see me one last time
I want to be reunited with friends, so spare me if you will
Don't fault me for my wrongdoings, it"s to be killed or to kill
I have to go so hear me now and spare me one more day
And let me live a happy life, for I wish not to perish this way

Oh my goodness what a sad state of affairs this old world is in to have to send anyone in harm's way especially when they didn't create the harm. My prayers are with you all and congratulations on your fine writing being a feature here at PoetrySoup! God Bless!

I like this poem, It almost sounds as if it's written by a soldier himself. I did think that some of the rhythm was shaky but if you're like all other poets, you re-write. I honestly think that if you even out the rhythm, you could publish this is a traditional journal as it is a very strong poem with impressive emotional impact.

Congratulations Lakisha on "A Soldier's Prayer" being featured. Someday, hopefully that prayer will be unnecessary and we will see peace and universal acceptance. From an old song "When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?" God Bless. Vince

Lakisha, again you have reached down deep and written a piece with so much emotion and truth. My cousin just returned from Iraq and I know he felt these exact words but can not express them in this manner. Thanks for sharing this. ~Des Juan
