Chameleons

Chameleons

  Chameleons we must be

      In a world forever changing

           For the sequel to tranquility

                 Is impending rearranging

                      The news of sudden tragedy

                             A husband leaves his wife

                                   Before night stars can twinkle

                                       Chaos rules your life

Maybe life has lost its luster

                                          Stagnation’s dulled the sheen

                                    The mind’s become too idle

                                Wreaking damage unforeseen

                          Hence the chameleon emerges

                    Commencing transformation

              Altering its persona

           To command the situation

              Like the chameleon in nature

                  We employ our disguise

                       Our mechanism of defense

‘Til a plan we can devise

The Wildflower

It could have been you
       Hiding behind the post
           Stretching out your arms
               Your tiny face upturned
                      To the early morning sun
                            Waving at me softly
                                 While swaying with the breeze
                                     It was only wishful thinking...
But you look so much the same
that I walked a little closer
                                                      and nearly called your name
                                                         A scent so very subtle
                                                           Drifted through the air
Reminding me of the last time
I tied a ribbon in your hair

I picked the wildflower for you
But you’re much too far away
Shall wilt before you see it
                                                        This one I picked today
                                                      Against the velvet petals
You won’t get to press your face
But together we will pick the one
That grows up in its place
I’ll save this in our special book
                                     Pressed between the pages
And hide it in our secret place
                            We’ve known about for ages
The next time that you come again....
You’ll know right where to look!

The Reunion

Plagued with signs of aging
Only the eyes bore a semblance
These were faces I used to know
Yet I barely see a resemblance.
Hair that once was wavy and long
Now barely grows in sprinkles
The face that never had a flaw
Now creased with lines and wrinkles

My eyes slowly traveled the room
Trying to look so nonchalant
Reveling in all the rounded figures
Sporting an out-of-date bouffant.
And to think I once was jealous
And made to feel so out of place
By this very group of matriarchs
Without a sign of youth to trace

How gracefully I’ve aged
As I compared myself to these
How much younger I appear
I’ve sailed the years with ease.
The sound of voices intermingling
Draws me back to reality
Scarcely believing what I’m hearing
They’re saying the same things about me!

The Annual Family (Dys)function

I burned the crescent rolls,
and then her tears flowed...
We knew they were inevitable,
she was definitely on overload.

Too many people in the house,
and way too much commotion...
“You brought a dish not on the menu?”
Turned her tears into an ocean.

“I’ll just scrape the burned part off,”
evoked another muffled sob...
“My dinner's ruined and nobody cares
I’m just too old for this job.”

“Think I’ll have a glass of wine,
Care to join me sis?”
Think we’re going to need it
To survive this Thanksgiving bliss!”

“I’m never doing this again
I just cannot take the stress…
Hosting a family gathering
Causes me nothing but duress!”

A year since then has passed
My telephone starts to ring
“Coming home for Thanksgiving dear?”
“Of course, what should I bring?”

The Cloak of Friendship

The Cloak of Friendship We wore our cloak of friendship like the finery of royalty; now it hangs threadbare and tattered, a dishonored breach of loyalty. In the armoire of desolation a mere cloud of evanescence; this kinship once so vibrant now stripped of incandescence. Treasured memories from a lifetime just discarded and destroyed; how doth a heart feel heavy when it’s nothing but a void? Drowning in my dolor our lost friendship to lament; you just let it slip away when for a lifetime it was meant. Julie Conerly 2010

No Trace (Dedicated To Her Memory)

She’s gone, there’s no Trace
No more leather, no more lace
No alluring smile upon her face
He took her and left me with no Trace

A dark and troubled life she’d led
The hidden tears dark eyes had shed
                                          Dangerous waters she had tread
Today I found out Trace was dead

Tough and hard, the role she’d played
Of nothing, she said, was she afraid
But when all her cards had been laid
Twas a tender heart God had made

A sister’s love we had shared
To each other souls were bared
Standing by her when no one dared
Staying with me when no one cared

Now she’s gone, I have no Trace
No long black hair falling ‘cross her face
In heaven now, a better place
Leaving me here without a Trace

 I’ll miss you…

Black Clouds

Blackened sky enveloped her
A storm fierce and unforeseen
Lashing out its vengeance
Shattering the serene

Yesterday she’d lingered
Embraced the sun upon her face
Dark clouds just a memory
Blue skies in their place.

Black clouds too familiar
She’d beckoned them for years
Now determined to escape them
Weary of the tears

Fingers of lightning strike her
Though guilty of no wrong
Flashes of the shackles
That bound her for so long

Stinging tears of stormy days
She’d positioned in the past
Blurred the vision of the dream
That sunny days would last.

I Have Seen

I Have Seen As I look back upon my life I never must forget For more than thirty thousand days I’ve seen the skies ablaze at sunset. What a miracle, I thought As I hummed a little tune Because for just as many nights I’ve gazed in wonder at the moon. I’ve witnessed brilliant streaks of lightning Watched a million flowers bloom I’ve seen the faces of my loved ones And how their smiles light up a room. I’ve been awed by mountains’ majesties Watched the roll of ocean waves Been enchanted by fresh snowfall Seen tears flow by many graves. I’ve watched my children’s children grow Then start families of their own I’ve seen the fruits of my hard labor Emerge from seeds that I have sown. I’ve seen birds soar among the clouds Marveled creatures of the sea So much beauty in this world That God has shared with me. For my Daddy Julie Conerly Votolato 10/02/11

A Child Is Born

So rare a gift bestowed
To hold the future in your hands
Your legacy in life
Your values to unfold…
A chance to make and mold
The person you were naught
Make perfect the mistakes
Live dreams you often sought
Make reality the vision
That never came to be…
You hold within your hands
A challenge none can equal
The actress in the leading role
The star in your life’s sequel
The future’s in your hands
The world’s waiting for your plans.

Old Friends

Emerging from the shade Warm rays seeping through our pores chills slowly dissipating Arms spread wide to soak in more A sky of endless azure Soft breeze dancing through our hair Watching clouds turn into dragons Then disappear into thin air I watched as she spread sunshine To all we chanced to meet Convinced that as we strolled along Flowers bloomed beneath her feet Talked of everything and nothing Laughing well into the night Reminiscing special memories With arms linked together tight I thought how very special She had always been to me How God designed this friendship As it was truly meant to be
