Birdheart

You needn't look too far to see,
Some twisted or afflicted thing,
Like broken wings on a bird that sings,
Its blissful melody.

And then a stranger passing by,
Who knows not who and knows not why,
Would look upon the little bird,
To point at it and sigh:

"How tragic is that hapless bird,
Who knows not of the joy of flight,
But taken of its blessed right,
By fate's most heartless err."

Yet surely still its song will ring,
With strength and joy atop the tree,
For knew he did within his heart,
That he was always free.

The truth ingrained deep in his soul,
That the sky was never the judge,
Of whether a bird is really a bird,
Or if he was ever enough.

So too should we be like the brave little bird,
Whom, though never flew up to the heights,
Believed that no matter the season or trial,
He would always be heaven's delight.

Dulcius Ex Asperis

There lies before my eyes a soaring mountain,
For certain at the top there is a view,
A sight I’ve seen before the falling curtain,
Of chapter and of life that I once knew.

Perhaps I long to see a new horizon,
So far beyond the looming pile and peak,
And yet it seems to border on delusion,
As truth of lassitude begins to speak.

What heart and strength that bore me ever forward,
Reminds me still of ceaseless strain to bear,
That I could earn a future unencumbered,
No longer to endure or to repair.

And so as every step engraves behind me,
Another page of epic on my soul,
And every wall ahead that falls before me,
Assumes its place as saga on the scroll,

Pray stars above would guide towards the summit,
A life far past the edge of spread too thin,
And gentle wind would echo to the sonnet,
“Dulcius ex asperis” from within.

Quiet Perseverance

Quiet perseverance,
Doesn’t need redundant words.
Nor an audience to see it,
Or an echo to be heard.

Only quiet perseverance,
Speaks the loudest in the night,
When the darkness overwhelms you,
And your fears devour the light.

But with quiet perseverance,
And a mustard seed of faith,
Grows a towering sequoia,
Common sense cannot explain.

So in quiet perseverance,
Fear ye not the endless drought,
For the rain will come for certain,
And your seed will surely sprout.

For it’s quiet perseverance,
That will lead you to your soul,
In the splendour of the universe,
Beyond a man’s control.

So let quiet perseverance,
Be the wind that fills your sails,
Towards the limitless horizon,
Where your triumphs will prevail.

Now if quiet perseverance,
Seems too difficult to find,
Just remember the creator,
That imagined your design.

Know that quiet perseverance,
Trembling softly in your heart,
Is proof beyond the slightest doubt,
Your life was set apart.

Two Steps Forward, One Step Back

Two steps forward, one step back,
Grateful just to be on track.
Goodness knows the price of that,
Two steps forward, one step back.

Always hanging by a thread,
Pushing to the very edge,
Fighting demons in my head,
Always hanging by a thread.

Little changes day by day,
Struggling just to play the game,
Some would quit, but I will stay,
For little changes day by day.

What a rotten hand of cards,
Never know quite where to start,
And at times I fall apart,
What a rotten hand of cards.

But what’s the difference if it’s fair,
Life will catch you unaware,
Why then is there need to care,
What’s the difference if it’s fair.

Doesn’t matter how it looks,
Winners get to write the books,
And what if trying’s all it took,
Doesn’t matter how it looks.

Choose to live for those you love,
When the road is long and tough,
And alone is not enough,
Choose to live for those you love.

Just keep at it, you will see,
Sometimes things are meant to be,
Let your mind and soul be free,
Just keep at it, you will see.

Two steps forward, one step back,
Turn to look at where I’m at,
Reached the summit, changed the facts,
With two steps forward, one step back.

The Beast That Lurks

There sleeps a monster in my heart,
I thought that I had tamed,
Perhaps I never will escape,
Because we share a name.

He holds within him darkest depths,
As violent as can be,
And yet his only fervent wish,
Is simply to be free.

I wonder how he nested here,
Or just from whence he came,
For there are times I question if,
We simply are the same.

Then gazing into mirror’s light,
My spirit knows it well,
That innocently he reflects,
The garden where we fell.

I know not what to do with him,
When he extends his hand,
Or if I have authority,
To rule him with command.

But this I know with all my heart,
The lion and the lamb,
Will love and guide me still, despite,
The monster that I am.
