Words and Phrases

Oft when folks are talkin', They'll use a phrase or two, That can be taken wrongly, The meaning misconstrued; And so they get the text all wrong, And spread it far and wide, And when you learn what you have said, You wonder why they lied. Some people just don't listen, When others talk to them, So just part of what you're saying, Ever gets through to them. Here a word and there a phrase, Is stored within their mind; Then they weave it all together, And Oh what they can find. It pays you well to watch your words, Speak plain, don't joke around; For what you say in jest my friend, Will later on rebound. Then just try to 'splain it. Explain it if you can; But most folks won't believe you, 'Cause they just don't understand. Judy Ball So often people spread around gossip that has no real bearing whatsoever simply because they misunderstood what someone said to them. Sometimes people will say something in jest that others take as serious talk so that's the story they spread to others. Why is that? Because it's often more fun to some people to believe the worst than it is to believe the best about someone else. Remember, when someone tells you gossip about someone else it's a good idea to ask yourself what that same person says about you when you aren't there to defend yourself. A gossip is like a loaded gun. When it goes off all it causes is destruction.

Judy, I'm inspired and how true you have nailed it down and held it down and made the point. I'm reminded of Yeat's poem "The Second Coming" where he describes that "passionate intensity" from the negative and that lack of conviction from the positive. P.S. I am very fond of home made biscuits. :-). Ruben

Thanks so much Ruben. I too love my home made bread though I hear from Andrea that bread isn't good for people with O type blood. Wonder why that is. Glad you liked this. God Bless, JB

Quite true Judy. Also we must not forget that there are a few just waiting for a word or two meant well, to use in reverse transference of meaning.. well we can't deny we said it... but we didn't mean that reversed meaning they gave it... Smile. Agape, Moses

This is so true and it does happen often. People do not take the time to listen to what you are saying. Gossip spreads faster than a wild fire and burn more deeply. Excellent poem which leaves us something to think about. Tongue is mightier than the sword. love phyl

A very powerful message here, Judy, written with a great rhythm and rhyme. Until the last couple verses, I was relating this to a friend of mine who "tunes out" at times. With your permission, I'd like to send it to him. I certainly agree with your intended message about gossip being a loaded gun. There was a lot of this going on back in my school days. It's hard to know who your real friends are sometimes. Love, Carolyn

I wrote a sketch for the church youth group to perform on this topic. It was great fun. As the story got told and retold it grew more and more rediculous. Eventually it included space aliens and government cover ups. Tony
