White light

she witnesses

visitors arrive
night falls
coffee and pastries served
conversations continue
until the table is cleared
parental strive

she notices

start of their ball
candles are lit
posh wine glasses filled
in the wooden bowl
unshelled peanuts
but not for all

she hears

they say
little girls could choke
manners required
politeness calls
a quiet girl tolerated
behaving their way

she knows

curtains are drawn
lights go out
slide projector switched on
holiday pictures on a screen
audience thrilled
little girl's fawn

she feels

another scene
lengthy blinding white light
in between
again and again
her loneliness
hidden and unseen
