Mom and Dad rescued him when he was only two.
I was three, and he was bigger than me.
I'd brush his shaggy hair
and he would just stand there
and wait patiently until I was done,
then shake and he'd look like he had before I'd begun,
because of that we called him Tramp.

He was a big fur ball with clumsy feet,
and he was never ever neat,
except for being the neatest dog ever.
Does that make any sense, I don't know ...
Well I grew and was finally bigger than he,
But it sort of never felt that way to me.

There's something about a boy and his dog
That even best friends can never replace,
Especially that happy, shaggy face.
One day I came home from school
And Mom said he had died.
I went off on my own and cried.
To me he was always bigger than me
-- Always will be...

Such a beautiful story that many of us can relate so well to. My heart was warmed as I read of the beautiful relationship then saddened with the knowledge of the hurt you felt. Congratulations on this wonderfully written story Craig.

I just had a moment with my brother, recalling the first dog our family adopted, and how he died the week after we moved to a country home.......and the sound of my brother sobbing in the other room, was one of the first horrible moments of grief I had ever experienced. There is nothing in the world as sweet as the relationship of boy and his dog. :)

Sad, but depicts 'A mans best friend' perfectly. Cute write on an obviously much loved pet. They say a good test of human character is their love for animals-- you passed :)
