Author’s Notes: “The Hole in One's Own Heart” is a Shakespearean Sonnet that I finished on November 11, 2017. I approached this particular theme from a more traditional poetic standpoint, which should be evident from way in which I crafted its particular message and constructed the three stanzas and the closing couplet. My takeaway from this sonnet highlights the essential importance of God's love in our mortal world, and its continued maturation as our souls one day make their final journey into His Divine embrace. (Gary Bateman – November 11, 2017) (Shakespearean Sonnet)

Rhyming Sequence: abab|cdcd|efef|gg

Sonnet Composed in Open Meter

Categories: allegory, god, heaven, imagery, metaphor, spiritual, and symbolism.

The Hole Deep in One’s Own Heart In moments of greatest loss, sadness and sorrow, A hole forms so deep within one’s own heart; There it shall remain so for each ‘n every morrow, Until life’s end when comes our Heavenly depart! My dearest, such times of tribulation define us pure, For we know not all the twists and turns of this life; We must keep our faith ever true, never it to abjure, Whilst seeking angelic guidance from this human strife! As we recommit our true faith in God’s blessings above, We seek solace in His love that only our souls may find; With this our passions ‘n emotions form the deepest love, Giving us His blessing as our souls return His love in kind! God’s love brings our eternal souls into His Heavenly space, And makes our injured hearts whole in His Divine embrace! True when we lose something or someone we truly leave an emptiness in our heart appears that never can be filled again til the moment we reunite with our Lord for HE is the only one that can make our heart whole again! A heavenly poem deeply philosophical with spiritual overtones that only an adept could conceive the grandeur of its importance! Sehr gut mein fruend, Gary! Excellently done!

Hello Connie, Many thanks to you for your very gracious and spot-on comments here. It seems that my sonnet here has ended up with a sort of universal resonance among readers who share a like interest with you, and with me for that matter. I've touched on themes similar to this one in some previous poems, in addition to some co-writes that I did with my wife, Ingrid. I know we've talked about the influence from Angels before. Ingrid and I have had similar experiences as well. Thanks to for the FAVE too!! This is the first sonnet that I've written in a while, but plan to do more of them in the near-future. And I have similar plans for other themes that are in this same spiritual genre. Best Always, Gary

A stunning sonnet Gary no wonder it was awarded POTD - I've got the music of 'the day thou gavest lord is ended' going through my brain and your words almost fit to the music:-) (it would make a lovely hymn!) :-) hugs Jan xx

just a few tweeks with the syllables and it would fit the music perfectly and make a lovely hymn -on Friday I went to a fund raising event a guy called Simeon Wood played that hymn on the panpipes - it moved me to tears! http://www.simeonwood.com/

Thanks Jan very much for your very kind comments here. I'm very pleased you liked my latest sonnet here. Looks like I really hit both a "nerve" and a "need" with this sonnet. The music you've noted above: "the day thou gavest lord is ended," is perfect. And I do see the connection with my words!! Marvelous for sure. A Big Thanks Jan!! Cheers, Gary

Hello Dear Anne-Lise, Thanks for your note here. (This sonnet appears to have really connected with a number of people.) It looks like I chose the right poetic vehicle for expressing the passion, emotions, and sorrow that at times touches all of us, and ends up leaving an ethereal or spiritual wound that only God Himself can heal. Best Always!! Gary

Hello Stef, Thanks for you very heartfelt words here. (As I mentioned to Eve below, I really had no idea that this particular sonnet would be popular.) Anyway, I'm very pleased that you liked my sonnet and the message of love and hope that it conveys. (You may want to read some of my other Sonnets I've written, as well as a Canzone I posted on 01 Jan 17, under the title: "Dreams Divine" which touches on their relationship ultimately with God's Holy Spirit.) I look forward to reading your poetry too!! Cheers and Best, Gary

Hello Eileen, Great to hear from you!! I fully agree with what you say, for sure!! I'm very happy you liked my approach with this sonnet. I had no idea until this evening (here in Germany) that this sonnet of mine was chosen for POTD. Even without that, I'm just glad to see that it's had such an uplifting affect for those who've read it. Best Wishes, Gary

Thanks Silent One for your gracious and kind comments here on my sonnet. Great to hear from you!! (I'm back after a trip and a brief hiatus from writing.) Just so you know, I've actually, if you check out the complete list of poems I've posted since 2014, written a representative number of Shakespearean and Petrarchan Sonnets, and I believe, at least 3 or 4 posted Canzones following the classical format developed by Dante in the 13th century. I really enjoy composing these types of writes, but the challenge is worth the effort in the end. I look forward to reading more of your poems as well. Continued Best Wishes!! Gary
