Silence

The late December air rings with the silence crisp and chill. Oceans of drifted, white, snow crest barn doors and windows. Frosted panes sheets of crystalline parchment roll, perforated like strips of ribbon candy from tin roofs as icicles hang from gutters fringed like shawls. The sharp snap of branches masks the bark of distant dogs.

Oh ... this is so wonderful. It completely captured me and took me to that wonderful place. I especially love the last two lines--they allude to what occupies our minds but what we don't want to acknowledge. Wonderful!

Congrats Deb, on "Silence" being featured. I'll take that ocean's roar on a beach over the "oceans of drifted white snow" but after four kids, "Silence" is still my favorite sound.

You're really good at evoking images and setting scene. I really enjoyed reading this. Also, to answer your question, I adore confessional poetry, so that's what I aim for. I do read cheerful poems, even humorous poems. However, my own are rarely like that. Just the way I write really and what I base my poems on, for instance stormy family relationships and childhood.

As with Sharon, the imagery in this is beautiful. The flow is great and the way that the opening two lines create a tension (or contradiction) with 'rang' and 'silence' is a clever device that works well.
