New Year's Eve
On New Year's Eve I sit and ponder,
Memories past and times long gone,
And as I think my heart grows fonder,
Of times and things both lost and won.
It seems the mind sees clearer now,
Than when at first these things occurred,
And now I'm wont to think on how,
What came by chance and what incurred.
I sit and sort my loss and gain,
And tally that still owing,
And figure out where I'm to blame,
Remembering, not foregoing,
Any slight, however small,
By accident or plan,
And learn from that which I recall,
To be a better man.
