I wrote this poem after my grandmother passed away in October 2021.  My last grandparent and I still miss her so much.

I have also performed it live at various spoken word events.  The video is one a I produced with the words.

It was like the sun did not rise and mourning birds sang no morning melody. The heavens were so grey, pouring like Noah's floods, preparing me for the storm, which drowned my heart. I felt like a butterfly helpless against the wind. I had no time to build an ark nor to sail towards those uneven paths, which would allow me to hear your last breath. Maybe hold your hand and hear you call my name one last time. I will never forget that moment of silence, when the world seemed to pause and I feel, I'm still standing still, feeling numb, unable to express myself, so I supress myself. Waiting for the birds to sing. To trigger suppressed sentiments, but there is no metaphor for this void I feel, like the emptiness of the room, where you would say; "my prince has come home" You would always ask if I was hungry, still force me to eat when I was not. Together we would pick sweet grapes from those vines, which ran high up against your sage veranda. You would always bring out the pot I cracked, when I was six, saying with a nostalgic look; "Hands of my first grandson broke this." How you would treasure such memories. The season of death has returned, to steal my jewel away from me. I look in dismay at discoloured fallen leaves, scattered like my emotions. Will those fruits ever taste the same, now that your precious hands cannot pick them? Who will treasure what I broke? You used to always call grandpa's name, now I know you are together again. Mama still calls for you, I say to myself, she has gone, mum, as has her laughter and her smile. There will be no more hugs, no one to call nanna now. The sky still remains dark, but the floods seem to be easing and I know one day the sun will return, as will the birds, singing in your remembrance.

A wonderful tribute to your late grandmother Silent One. Like Paula I only had one grandparent and my grandmother lived a long way from us, so I missed out too. Your poem expresses the love between you and your nanna, it’s beautiful. I listened to the video, it’s very moving… Belle

Dear Silent,my grandma minded me from babyhood as mom worked full time. Grandma gave me her love of birds, flowers& nature, colors, fresh food, baking, family, fine linens, ancestors, helping & visiting the less fortunate, & Jesus Christ, for my mom was not a believer. At age 6 we moved 3hr drive away. I was in therapy 30 yrs over that

Your poem goes painfully deep to the core for e quite Truth of feeling. Perhaps the soul you grow wrote it. My own soul wrote a poem once, instead of my inner Voice. It is life changing…a reading of jewels more than words. Hugs for U

Dear Poet, this is an amazing poem - your poems touch with its incredible expression of true emotions. Very sorry for your loss - I can feel what this loss means to you. I lost my elder brother last July - and every single day I miss him, and remember him. Life is not same to me any more. I was very close to my grandmothers too - and their memories are still precious for me. To my faves. Hope you come back to Soup. Love and blessings ~ Mala

Beautiful and heartbreaking... filled with the whispers of silent grief, colored in shadows of gray and flowing in waves of seashell shaped dismay. This is a brilliant and loving tribute and reflection. Love to you and blessings too. I have missed your beauty and inspirations so ... Love, Gina

Such an evocative write. I can very well relate to your feelings ! The agony of losing a dear one, I too have felt. A grandma's special love for the grand child, even exceeds sometimes a mother's love . A lovely tribute from a sobbing grandson, the only gift he can now give his deceased grandma....

Silent One, your beauty shines in precious love for your dear grandma. My grandchildren are my joy, and my hope. When I must depart this life, I will ask God to let me be in their cloud of witnesses to cheer them on. I pray she knows about your tribute to her, I know she would be very blessed. I have felt the same utter sadness at the loss of grandparents, my grandpa was my best friend. Your beautiful, beautiful pen flows again, and I hope it never stops. Hugs to you, precious one. <3

WoW! Silent, I echo what Heidi said. There's nothing like a grandmother’s love. You were fortunate to have your grandmother as an adult. I lost both of mine when I was a child.I am sorry for your loss.Excellent job-Alexis
