Just Fishing

The day was shades of grey
like sketches in charcoal,
almost one dimensional,
as I gazed from my perch
at water’s edge
looking beyond my line
which was taut and moving.
Startled, I flicked my rod back
but the line went limp
and I left it there,
not thinking—or caring that—
the bait might be gone.
I wasn’t really here to fish anyway.
It was only an excuse
to be alone and--
some might think it strange
to be just sitting here
in the rain…

Been There----love doing that. We could say that "solitude is in the heart of the beholder". Really enjoyed this one Craig.

To pretend to be doing one thing while you are actually doing another is the true heart of a poet. Absorbing all the experiences of life and then drawing them into powerful write. I can envision myself doing the very same thing, but the difference for me Craig is that I would go fishing, not catch a single thing, and admit that I loved sitting in the rain to talk to my Lord and Savior! All my best to you and your family!

you created a lovely picture with your words and a soothing wonderful feeling to it. haven't done any fishing, but have always looked at it as a peaceful and contemplative activity. i got to experience it thru your words, thank you!! Congratulations, Craig!

I've finally been able to judge the "Solitude" poetry competition. While I wait for Soup to post my winners, I'm letting some know how they went. Looks from the comments below that you already have a second place for this poem. I'd like to take the time to tell you that you now also have a 3rd place. I've spent a little time fishing, so I really enjoyed this take on the theme. Nicely done.

Craig your poem reminds me of another scenario. Sitting on the bank, line in the water, but caring less about catching anything, is much like sitting in a rowboat still tied to its mooring, and just feeling the gentle, peaceful rocking of the waves. It does wonders for the mind. Congratulations... YarnSpinner

:) I like this! I know my dad would have liked this, too. I would like to take my girl fishing when she's bigger. My hubby is NOT a fisherman. Me? It's been years, but I LOVED it, the peace, being with one's thoughts. You captured that perfectly in your poem. Best wishes in the contest. Hugs, Cyndi
