January

January comes traipsing in with muddy boots. Even new snowfall seems to lose its luster and houses seem no more to gleam. In the aftermath of festive celebrating, the new month’s first day is a paltry offering with nothing great to follow. The very first day January comes calling, some folks feel inspired to make resolutions, but others, hung over, just curse. November, though dull, at least brings gifts of thanks and hope of joy to come. January is the ugly sister. you make this sound so melancholy, makes me feel sad. I'm going through your poems. I will try to read five of yours tonight. And post one tonight also ;}

Oooh I like this one. This is exactly how I feel about winter after Christmas is over. There's this building up to the holidays that's exciting and full of anticipation... and then the anti-climax (aka January) comes to wipe the smiles from our faces! To answer your question, all of my poems are posted on PS - I only started writing poetry last year (though I've been writing prose forever), so I don't have much material yet!

Poor January. I think of him as masculine, he is so loud and blustery. Congratulations on a great poem and win. Love, Joyce

yes I see what you mean, Andrea. No great love for January in your explicit poem. It,s our coldest month here in Fl on some days but there are still lots of nice ones to enjoy. It was a forlorn month when I lived in Vt to be sure. Good luck in the contest with your muddy booted traipsing ugly month!

The ugly sister is RIGHT ON THE MARK!!! A great idea ....I too prefer the dull days of November to January anytime!! You made me think of your old tongue twister entry here..didn't yours have sisters in it? I have to go back and read yours again?

Hmm, I don't think I made any resolutions in January. Am I the one that hung over? I hope not Andrea. Nice Tanka and I wish you luck in the contest. Shh, I am not sure if what I made for this contest was a personification. Honestly, I read the meaning of personification, I need a nice critic like you! Love Dalila

You got it Andrea, I couldn't have said it any better - the doldrums last till the middle of March then I feel hope seeping into my frozen bones. :)

I've often felt the same way. I'm ready for January to be over or just warm again. this cold is for the birds, who migrate away from it! ha! a great entry for the contest. I've been thinking along the same lines - well how different can they all be anyway? it will be interesting to see :)

Yes, this is a great description of the winter month of January! I love the "...ugly sister." bit! And yeah, some make resolutions and some are too shy and timid to make any dedications for the new year! I agree that the hype for New Years might be too high as compared to the holidays before it! What a wonderful poem Andrea! Awesome Work!!
