Indian Summer

Memories of autumn linger still The pale sun loiters on the hill; A prodigal year now grown old Is gathering all her days of gold. Flocks of birds now eager to go We share the dream with footsteps slow; We meet beneath the apple tree Join hands in silent company. We will not part love, oh not yet Too soon the weary sun will set. The crickets cease to sing their song The gold and russet wilt away; The crimson trees stayed too long And all the sky is wet and grey. We know at night the frost will fall And scar the asters on the hill; The golden rod and sumac all Will feel the hand of winter's chill. But love, it is not the time to part I need to hold you near my heart; Yesterday was such a golden smile Today we might love awhile; Till autumn dies and love forget And we must leave, but dear not yet.

"Till autumn dies and love forget And we must leave, but dear not yet." I was just reading your marvelous book of poems, Polished Stones. Of all the internet poets I've read there are only two cherished favorites and you are one of them. I've missed you and hope you are doing well. Happy New Year. Love, Dave Austin

Superbly written and articulated. Your phrasing, as ever, is crisp and colourful. This reminds me so much of Yeats' 'Ephemera.' You will soon see the similarities if you GOOGLE it. I love it! One of your best... :)

This one is a heart ripper, Elizabeth. Tragically beautiful in nature and in love. Sharing the beauty of what is in the present as if eternal and the tradgedy of what must come ...but not yet dear... not yet... masterful!

Beautiful scenes come to mind with this poem. I hate when fall is almost gone and things look so bare for snow is not far behind. A depressing thought. Love Phyl

Your knowledge of nature is a wonderful gift. It's beauty gives the reader a lift. And when you share it in poetic phrase. The sun shines warm in all our days.

Lizzy-Dear, You already know that I think you're poetry is superb. This piece is so moving. I am a huge fan of VERBS. The one thing I was taught by a college professor when it came to strong writing skills is that one perfect verb is worth three wishy-washy adjectives. You INSTICTIVELY do this. LOITER and SCAR, for example, illustrates this. Though you are ever the poem crafter, you never stray from an emotional wallop-- a lethally enthralling writer. Keep your eyes turned inward! Hugs Cyndi
