I'Ll Seek To See

On this my brother's birthday What gift can I possibly give If I listen and see with my heart My own sad emotions I won't relive Yesterday can be contemplated Without feeling all the pain I can be a more loving brother If in the past I don't remain By taking time to really see him I'll witness how far he's come It's more important the person he is Then the place we have both come from Yes the past shaped the people we are So by looking more closely I can see Those things that make me feel angry Are those sad bits I keep inside of me So on this my brother's birthday With a gentle heart and open mind I'll seek to really see my brother and the love that I seek I'll find.

I remember you telling me about your brother in a comment on an old poem I wrote. I can relate, in the sense, that I'm much the oddball in the family when it comes to my siblings ... almost none of my interests are aligned with theirs, so it can be difficult to find some common ground, but I love them nonetheless ... hope you two can reconnect, and can see each other not as you want them to be, but how each other really is. Heartfelt writing ....

Thanks Paul, both my brother and I have come a long way. There is a large geographical difference that limits our contact. Sometimes when families come together people revert to their childhood roles.

very very emotional write, Richard..i have a brother too and he is so different from me..As teenagers , we never got along but now things have changed . Actually his birthday was yesterday. Yes we had a lot to overcome and it was due to our father. There are residual effects but I think we both can be proud of coming out of a dark situation and ending up as productive and caring people.

I have two brothers, Richard. Both older than I am...both very different to one another. I'm glad that you want to reach out and love your brother. It's true...we all carry some sort of baggage. To love past all that...is truly the sign of Christian maturity. Hugs, dear.

The past should no longer hurt us but it can be hard to get over things that were said by the person who controlled all of us.
