This is a bit exaggerated but true story of a woman who many years ago was my best friend, but she had a bad habit of contantly putting down her husband, who was a very good person and who was much nicer to his wife than I ever noticed other men being to their wives. In fact, he acted as if he worshipped her, so it made me kind of pissed that she acted so ungrateful. I did not have a crush on him like I say in this poem, but I DID envy her for the way she got treated like a queen. (I told her if she ever divorced and i was free, I'd go out searching for him. haha)

I know your wife. She is my friend, but also I know too things behind your back she often says to disparage you. I see the way you gaze at her; the way you touch her face. You nickname her “My lovely queen,” but it’s a disgrace. She doesn’t see you as her “king.” She hates that you are thin, bald and unattractive too. Her discontent’s a sin! An ugly man you're not; in fact, I see right through her lies. You are so beautiful to me. I think you are a prize. I love the light you radiate. No pretense do I see. You treat all people with respect and say kind words to me. Not often do I see the type of love that you display after years of marriage and in such a romantic way. It makes me sad for you and me - the things I see and hear. For if you were my love, dear man, my everything you’d be. I’d hug you each time we parted, and I would be remiss if when you returned home, I would not greet you with a kiss. Oh, if someone looked at me with utter sweet delight and never frowned at things I did if I’d not done them right. You never say a cruel word to make your wife feel worse. Your wife confided that to me. It’s worthy of sweet verse. I cannot think of anything that she can complain of. I would more than thankful be oh, if I were your love. A really interesting take, Andrea, on the theme. Feel sad for the man - he deserved better - someone like you!

Incredible how partners always see the worst in one's supposed lover. The grass greener.

A wonderful take on the topic.... dear Andrea. There are such wives, (husbands too) who cannot see the beauty of the person at hand, despite being full of grace and love. Very sad. All the best in the contest.

Hi Andrea, I really liked your take on the contest theme. Who wouldn’t be appreciative of a man like you wrote about? I know I would be. He sounds like a good man. Hopefully, your old friend widened up and realized what she had. Best wishes in the contest. Have a wonderful evening:-) Alexis

Sometimes you don't know what you've got until it's gone. Over the years I've seen many people degrade their spouse... to what end... I've never been able to figure it out. I challenged one person about this... she gave me all sorts of excuses... and thought i was way off base. People are funny. Well penned my friend.

That's so sweet, Andrea. It's hard to understand wives like that, and I've known several. Best of luck in contest!
