I Remember When

I remember when . . . kids fought at school. At worst, they’d end up with a bloody nose. But kids today get bullied publicly and ridiculed on You Tube videos. I remember when . . . folks’ arguments took place and few of us were “in the know.” Today, though, we see idiots galore that cuss and brawl on Jerry Springer's show. I remember when. . . brutality was televised when kids were tucked in bed. Now your child need only type the word and see a victim get shot in the head. I remember when. . . we had a war, but it was “cold” and seemed to be maintained. Today the terror is at your own mall. We’ve lost - in spite of all that we have gained.

All very neatly put together Petal. The world is constantly changing. The young adapt and before long, this is all they will remember. Good luck in the contest. Take care, Richard

Wow, Andrea...what an awesome write about such a horrific topic! You captured it all so very well...Sad...Tom and Jerry was about as brutal as it could get and now? Blood and gore and we wonder why kids act out in violent ways! Sorry I haven't been around to comment much...been busy and down...not a great combo! Hope all is well!

Wonderfully written, and so true. The progress we have made as a society isn't all good, especially when you think of the things we discarded along the way. And thank you so much for your comments on When A Dreamer Sighs

Oh, and about what Cyndi was saying about TV shows...not many wholesome shows out there anymore. There are a few, though. My daughters favorite show is Duck Dynasty...just a bunch of country boys being goofy...so its pretty funny.

So true. And things changed so quickly. Im 31, and things are so very different than they were when I was a kid, and that wasn't too awful long ago! So sad. That last line really hits hard. Im favin this.

Ding dong, you rang the bell. This world just seems to be going to hell. But in the hearts and souls of each. The truth lives on for all to preach.

This poem has an outstanding message Andrea..Yes we are now introduced to violence in much more ways..Im scared for our children s future.Even grown ups get bullied everyday but at least they might defend themselves but a child is so innocent. Its so worrying to think.Re Jerry springer show.Do you think they re fake or real?I always wonder..Some seem to be out of this world.Awesome Andrea

Oh, boy, is this ever powerful. The first and last verses are particularly fitting, given the many recent tragedies in the U.S. (my neighbour!) As always, you handle a very difficult topic with such a deft hand.

Like what you did with this! Zap! Oddly enough, I was just talking to my hubby last night that I hope in a few years there is some kind of family show on TV, not that I want to have the TV on all the time. But sometimes, after a long day, curling up beside my girl & watching something we can BOTH enjoy would be nice. I fondly recall Little House on the Prairie, Sunday nights with Disney.. even Bionic Woman was mostly clean. NOW? I would even have to MUTE COMMERCIALS! Hope this soars to the top

Brutal honesty here, Andrea! I admire the way you tell it straight. I hate to admit this (even though I HATE the show), whenever I'm flipping through the channels and Jerry Springer's on, the public humiliation is downright hypnotic... you know what I mean? Maybe it's just human nature... TV wasn't used abusively back then, that's what I think. I believe this will do great in the competition!
