Gabriel
Gabriel, hands clenched in tiny fists:
a boxer's stance,
prepared, in utero, for this cold world
of happenstance,
I see your fuzzy image on the ultrasound
and know: I am already lost,
despite the pain of love and
heartache's cost.
Gabriel, tiny feet kicking:
come out fighting,
prepared for a world that may be
less than inviting,
I will protect you like a lion
guards her cub,
I am frightened and awed by the
depth of my love.
Gabriel, child of my child,
firstborn of firstborn,
you've mended my heart that
was so wounded, and torn.
