Free Will: Illusion Or Reality

Are we really free? Free to chose to: Go wherever we please? Do whatever we desire? Be with whom we wish? Pick whichever thing we fancy? Without coercion Without ever being obliged by an unseen force in A predetermined or predestined way? How? How can we have free will to be wherever we Wish to be When: Bound to earth we are with the Heavy chains of gravity Obliged, incessantly to follow it And move Around its circumference Around the sun Around the galaxy Around the universe, Having no chance ever to escape its Deterministic laws? Are we free? Have we got a free will? If yes, when did it start? The day we were born or later on? For the day we were born We knew nothing of: What we were Who we were What we wanted What we needed What we desired Subject were we to our bodily organs and Their functions No control had we over: Our heart Our liver Our kidneys Our spleen Our blood circulation Our brain And had no idea of How to defend ourselves against Deceases How to produce blood How to digest We had not any control then and we have No more control now as adults How then are we free? In what respect? Is it because we choose A over B? To be here or there? To do this or that? What if our choices are just the Result of the working of nature in us? The outcome of ideas and tendencies, Implanted in our mind and soul by Man or Mother nature? Doesn’t our acceptance of free will seems Like declaring: The earth goes aroud the sun because Of its free will Or A stone falls as a result of Its free will Or A seed spouts because of its free will Or The salmon, after venturing for years in The ocean, returns to the river it came to life, To lay its eggs, out of free will? Or is free will the result of Our Lord the creator and creator of the universe As they say? If that is the case then we may ask: Would the wisdom of our God entrust His creation to us? To our free will to do as we please? If the answer is yes, then What the result of such freedom would be on The world God has created? Whatever the answer may be, the mystery Will linger For We, know nothing for certain Hence We just believe! © Demetrios Trifiatis 13 OCTOBER 2014

Liam, my friend, when we examine a problem we have to examine it from all sides. Thank you for visiting and commenting! SENECA said " Those who accept their destiny, destiny carries them. Those who refuse it, destiny pulls them along the way!"

Please have a look at my language Demetrious, I was expressing how I feel I did not say you were wrong. You asked me the question here and therefore I answered here. I have no desire to argue with you, I like that your writing creates a dialogue. You are a passionate person and I find that appealing. Please do not take my responses out of context for it is not my intention to offend.

A further thought, fanticism comes from one person or a group expecting others to be and do the same as them. This is contrary to the concept of free will. My witness concerning my faith is the sharing of how I experience my relationship with Jesus but in no way is my desire to have another experience God in the same way. Each relationship is as unique as the individual who experiences it.

I know others who have done much more and with more experiences in life and have talked much less about themselves! Why do you want to win an argument that for 2600 years remains unsolved? If you want to write more use poetry soup mail! Please, use arguments not beliefs! Here is not a place of debate but of evaluation of the writing of someone, even if we do not agree with his writing! I think we have to agree not to tire our friends any more with that! Poetrysoup mail, please!

To be consistent with God's will, humility and being a servant to others is paramount. Through working with the homeless God has used their hands to touch me as well. For me the primary way that God has touched me is through others. I would never see myself as having exclusive knowledge or being the true representative, I merely answered your question. I believe our purpose is to be loving.

I feel it is a combination of both. I take God at his word. My faith is the result of numerous experiences where God has kept his promises. Through my weakness his grace has been revealed many times. I have been blessed to be a vessel of God's love and through my hands he has touched the poor as well as my friends and family. I am used dispite my own limitations.

A little bit humility doesn't hurt anyone! We never know what others have done, probably have done more and probably their work is greater, therefore putting ourselves above others and thinking we are the only true representatives of God on earth who do HIS work, might be considered an Hubris in HIS eyes. We have to be careful about exclusivity of knowledge for it might lead to fanaticism and actions similar to those we see today In Syria and Iraq for they too believe that are the only ones who know the truth!

Much to ponder, in giving us free will God has tied his own hands and as a result we see the results of our free will around us each day. When we submit our will back to God we become part of his kingdom and in the process the untying of his hands. Read my poem Human Hands if you have a chance. I found this piece thought provoking.

Oh, my dear poet. God has given us free will...Unfortunately, it is that free will that brought sin into this world. I followed your line of reasoning well...Well I know the meaning thereof. Your wisdom as always is a source of inspiration to me. He gives us free will because he loves us and wants us to DECIDE to love him. That is the greatest demonstration of love...give the freedom to choose, even the choice that may harm us. Lovely write. Filakia pola.

My dear, Eileen, as I have said: Belief and knowledge are two different things! Look what happens with THEM in Syria and Iraq they believe it is good to behead people and sell women to slavery because, they say, is what their God wants! Of course I know you do not believe in such things but in LOVE God's love! Here I just state a philosophical problem, that no matter what we do, we do not know the answer. The only thing we can do is to believe things to be this or that way! Thank you so much for your kind visit and comment! God bless you!
