Dad Was the Last Snowflake

The last great snowflake standing Little snowflakes fell swiftly All around the house they fell Eight male flakes_three little girls House was lively in winter As they all warmed by the fire Boys' boistour tales, girls brush long hair Then silence all rested heads At four A.M. each morn_chores Breakfast, lunch packed off to school Walking that long mile was rule School was important dad said Soon the oldest snowflake wed As life goes all followed him Leaving the warm hearth behind Some of them to produce twins As life goes_death visited All their humble doors sadness Some had children die at birth And some at very young age What they saw in their lifetime Changes that took place_cars_planes Atom bomb that ended war None their warm family disgraced Death started visiting doors One above middle went home first Then slowly they all went home But dad was the last snowflake

Very touching. My mom's mother was only 30 when I was born, mom was 16. There were ten of them counting the grands. Now there is an aunt 11 years older than me and I thank God for her, and an uncle 4 years younger. That's all. No one left out of the nine on dad's side. That is a lot of funerals and my wife's family was even larger. So I can relate.

You have created a beautiful sketch of family giving a great tribute to your father. This story resembles Indian families where we often have the blessings of our patents starting from Grandfathers to Grandsons. The joys & pleasures of such family atmosphere are unique with the sharing of each other’s troubles and pains. Excellent write my friend and many thanks for your comments on my featured poem. Love and best wishes with Seasons Greetings & good wishes for a Happy New Year .Ravindra..Sara

It sounds like the dad outlasted them all! Your poem reminded me a bit of "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel. So many changes that the generations see. I bet somewhere in the world is a family with last name Snowflake!! OH, thanks for commenting to my blog. I am glad I gave it a one last check to see. Your recipe sounded very yummy. LUv, Andrea

Your dad was a member of the greatest generation, Sara. People struggled more but also were grateful for simple pleasures and loved their families. Thanks for this beautiful peak into your family album. So precious to think of your father as "the last snowflake," perhaps the last purity in a world that was changing. Love, Carolyn
