Before I Sleep

Ere on pillow my head I lay
A word to thank my Lord I say
For the greatest miracle to me remain
To breathe and see and always be sane.

Another one I do, ‘tis here:
For the common and sensible pleasure and fear
The doors and windows all I close
And take my daily whiskey dose.

And I think one more can not hurt
And ‘tis of me a personal part
To muse and make superior verse
And readily read and right rehearse.

And then I transfer my fun and fancy
To bed where lie my loving Nancy
Waiting for me and breathing deep
To make a love before we sleep.

Before my head to bed I pillow
And into vision and dream I flow
One or two I have at stake
And with Nancy some merry make.
