A Son of Adam

A fool I’ve been to rest till noon
Awakened overnight by a dream
Of which my heart does still swoon;
Siren songs whereof I arose to soon
Befooled by romantic visions supreme

My flesh this mind does deceive
Mired in death’s temptation,
Tears of hope though I receive:
Life’s breath my soul does not believe
Escapes in evil’s dispensation

Human nature’s thoughts of grace
And spiritual rebirth is denied
Etched indelibly upon my face,
An earthen vessel lifeless in space,
Till time’s judgment is revived
