- the Orchid -

In my window there are two beautiful orchids They do best in east facing window with morning sun sheltered for the hottest sun of the day There are many myths about the Orchid One of those is the shape of the tubers It is said that the name orchid comes from the Greek 'testicle' Seed pods containing several millions microscopic seeds How awesome ......... The first orchid farmers were Chinese Already for a few thousand years ago, the Orchid used for decoration Some would say that the Orchid is a plant parasitism - it's just a myth The plant can live for example on the trees but not of the trees One day if you go past my window - see how beautiful my Orchids are 07.03.2014 A-L Andresen :)

"orchis" is the Greek for testicles. Fool's bollocks is another type of orchid and bollocks mean the same thing. Very odd but interesting too.The study of the origin of words is so intriguing. In ancient Greece, orchids were associated with virility. In fact, Greek women believed that if the father of their unborn child ate large, new orchid tubers, the baby would be a boy. If the mother ate small orchid tubers, she would give birth to a girl. Figure out why. BUT ORCHIDS ARE ORCHIDS. LOVErajat

I love flowers and in the fall I get depressed when I have to pull them out before winter sets in. I had an orchid growing for a number of years and it would bloom often. Nicely done on this poem . love phyl

I'm a lover of flowers my very dear friend Anne Lise & I love your very sweet & beautiful poem about an orchid. I've also 2 pots of orchids in my mezzanine here but they need more of my time to grow robustly. As I read your awesome poem, I can vividly imagine how beautiful the orchids in your window with the beautiful owner who lovingly & sweetly takes care of them. TYSM also for sharing important information about this flower. TTTYSM & happy wkend! love lots & hugs, Leo

Here it is my dear Anne Lise: Orchis (testicle), in Greek mythology, was the son of a nymph and a satyr. During a celebratory feast for Bacchus, Orchis committed the sacrilege of attempting to rape a priestess, resulting in his being torn apart by wild beasts, then metamorphosing into a slender plant with the beautiful flowers we know today!. HAPPY WOMAN'S DAY!

If I'm ever in Norway (Like my parents went to about 25 years ago) I'd love to see your Orchids! They are one of the most beautiful flowers in the world! Up there with the rose, and the iris! These three flowers are my favorites! I've always seen the Asian Orchids, I have seen others too! Your poem brought up the subject beautifully to tickle my mind for the Spring to come! I really enjoyed reading your amazing poem and insightful information here this evening! What a pretty piece! Great Work!!
