Bringing Life, To Life - Maya Kaabour's Blog

The sun smiled the earth, as the cobalt heavens embraced the world like two lovers hold on to each other after years of longing. The sea stood still, awaiting visitors to enter the outdoor Rawdah café so it's waves would roar and shatter, singing a welcome song at the highest pitch of their treble voices. Suddenly, a steep yet worn out voice said, "I'll clean them for one lira." My curiosity dragged my body to go and see what was going on, behind the jade bushes that hid the hurtful truth. My hands shivered as I watched him, that beautiful old man. He had cerulean eyes and wrinkles that drew a sad story that told of all the hard times he faced in his life. His hands were bruised and rough from all the shoes he has been cleaning for years. He cleaned the rich man's shoes with passion as the sweat of his forehead dripped on the flaming ground and evaporated into time. The rich man rudely pulled away his right foot as he put his left foot forward accidentally stepping on the old man's hand. However, the old man took it with a smile on his face. "Maya, sweetie, it's time to go have lunch at your grandmother's" said my mother. My heart bled out pity as my frown drew confusion on my face. Some people face all the rigors to bring life, to life. Just like that old man, cleaning shoes for a living. However, others just have life because they are lucky, and many are those that take advantage of it. I think of that old man everyday. Oh, and how I wish I could see him again, or even take a step back in time and give him at least a word of consolation, since everyone says that a kind word may heal and bless. I know I will never see him again, but that does not bring me down for I have seen him thousands of times in my dreams…
