Why even hold contests?

If your only inviting your favorites,

then honestly don’t you already have your favorite among them picked also?

I suppose that you could “invite” your favorites to your contest that’s open to the poetry soup populous and choose  only those that you’ve invited. However if your going to do such a loathing thing why go to the trouble of telling us about it?

Or even worse(in my amateur opinion) create a contest of your predetermined winners?

(continued) I guess what I am saying is what Francine said below here. Every judge will see things differently. there is nothing so subjective as poetry! I notice that every time I read varied comments to a poet's poem. I think it would be cool to have a committee of judges who were not members of Soup, who would just be given our poems to read and they would judge blindly like we did at Shadowpoetry. But I guess that is not a very realistic thing!

I remember when I was at Shadowpoetry.com. They had a yahoogroup and the woman who owned that site was very objective about who she chose for her weekly contests. She had her favorites. Of course, a person can't help but be drawn to certain styles. But she never chose her friends over substance. I was allowed to be one of her judges later on for her big annual contests. There were three judges on each big contest. I never knew who the other two judges were. I chose my faves based on five criteria. When I was doing my own contests here at Soup, I used the same five criteria: imagery/ theme/ technical(grammar and spelling)/ effectiveness of the poem/ personal opinion. None of the shadowpoetry judges ever saw eye to eye. Many of my faves did not even make the top 20 list of the other two judges.

So, now we are going back to pretending contests do not have exclusions? Very interesting. You can talk to me in Soup Mail if you need to Robb. As Carol said I believe you could invite the world and have no one come. Also, there are alot of shy and new folks here & ones long missing who, no harm would be done at all to write them saying, "Hey, I miss your writing, I really like it! How about an entry? Your choice of form and topic. Hey Robb YOU are invited to join Jack OUT of the Box. It's open to everyone!

my winners circle seems very repetitve but thats because they do such a great job, my titles and scoring I transfer to a large memo pad and I work from that, so other than by their style I usually don't know who most of the writers are, but the same ones usually place because they are that good. And tho' I try to prdetermine the amount of placements that doesn't always work for me either, sometines an extra one sneaks in

1. The only thing that I pre-determine is the number of pacements and the departure point...I'd ever place Vomiticus if his poem caught my eye

Yes exactly. Gives me the creeps like in crowds and cliques esp when its so obvious that the winners were pretermined. I saw that from the beginning.
