Dear Soupers:

Traditionally colors depict symbolic meaning across
cultures. They are depicted on flags, in social events, the natural
environment, the car we drive, and even the clothing we wear. Personality can
also be revealed by the color we wear and some informed decisions are even made
based on color.

My favourite colours are two-yellow in summer and blue in Winter.I do like red too..Basically the primary colours.White.black or purple are the colours i love wearing in clothing.Then when painting the house I love pastel colours..I do love colours when serving food as well.I guess colours make me feel somehow cheerful.They remind me of flowers.When i do make up i love shades of pinks..cherry..and browns.So many things to say re colours.O guess they re a reflection of our emotions and what surrounds us.Re the flag-Our maltese flag is read and white-Somehow reminds me to bring peace and love passionately : ).Nice blog

My favorite color is pink...then yellow....then purple.....for the way they make me feel.....happy....full of love and compassion... and bold....in that order! jimbo

I'm more drawn to cooler colors, and love blue flowers and all shades of lavender. This is definitely a study and interior designers incorporate it into adding moods to rooms etc.

Like Charlotte, I am profoundly affected by color, especially strong color in general, specifically purple in all its permutations. I'm fascinated by the white vs black cultural representations for death that Roy mentioned below. I have my own ideas of the meanings behind those choices. I'd love to know how they were actually derived. .. Jack

I love colour, and it's a funny thing but I had a strange spiritual experience a few years ago and during that time colour became very significant for me, particularly blues and purples, it's a difficult thing to explain but not only could I see colours, I could actually FEEL them in a real physical sense...

There's a name for this phenomenon: synaesthesia. I have a very limited experience with it, but I have a poet/musician friend who sees musical notes as colors... Jack

I have a lot to say on this topic but I have little time. I really love the symbolism of colors and I think it is very similar across the world. Also it depends on what the color is used for. I love ice blue cars but different other colors are my favorites for roses, etc.

I just wonder if it's really cross-cultural (implying that the symbolism is universal) or if it's culture specific. For example, the Chinese view red as a good luck color and associate white with death, not black.

Thank you.Very intriguing question. Yes colors convey universally symbolism and at the same time in specific culture they have specific meaning. You are correct.
