The Day I Flew the Coop
Lying on top of the fresh new grass
dandelions gladly cushioned my head
I chewed a grass blade soft, young and sweet
wishing I could stay in my bed
The dishes piled high no one cared
kids eyes glazed from too much gaming
the ants were well fed , the dog hungry.. not dead
yet when I said “what a mess!”I heard blaming
I pondered and wished I could stay here all day
and wondered if they would notice or even ask why?
The pale sky whitish blue the sun had a hue
the bugs biting my neck, I sighed
I jumped up and yelled “that’s it, let them sit!”
I’ll fly away on the tail of my kite
if could just get the right breeze;
I would lift off my feet
the neighbors would just think what a sight!
“Oh for sure she’s lost it!” they may murmur with glee
just watch and see how far she gets with that wind
Just a girl with a kite whose head was not right,
certainly both of her knees will get skinned
As I ran and I huffed my lungs sure did puff,
with one great leap I was high in the air
From above high I could see, a world smaller than me
and then I thought “Wait take me back, I do care”
As I glided back down, feet touching no sound
I was back where I knew I belonged
I lay back down on the grass, no one noticed or asked
The day I flew the coop… but didn’t stay gone.
