For You
I’m writing this poem in honor of you
Everything that you are, everything that you do
For the light that you shine and for all of your dark
For the way you surrounded and captured my heart
For each word you have written, each thought that you’ve shared
For the letters you’ve sent saying how much you’ve cared
About keeping our friendship alive and sincere
Even though we both knew it would still be two years
Till we finally meet. For this great heaping platefull
Of love you’ve so selflessly given, I’m grateful
You are the reason I’ve finally stopped fighting
Myself to pick up this damned pen and start writing
Again, somehow you’re always able to guide me
Away from my mind towards that truth still inside me
The truth that I’m no longer bound by the chains
Of my past, even though memories still remain
The hope which you’ve shared through your inspiring words
Has given me so much more than I’ve deserved
With your kindness of heart, you have shown me humility
You have somehow given me the ability
To see myself without seeing my addiction
To forgive myself looking past the afflictions
I’ve caused. And the guilt I feel through others suffering
Reminding me how it’s all part of recovering
Someone once told me I’d never be strong
Enough to love someone, now I know they were wrong
With every line that you’ve written through poetry
You’ve brought out feelings that never were known to me
Giving me courage to open my heart again
Without fear of it being torn apart again
Thank you for everything for me you’ve done
It’s for all of these reasons, my heart, you have won
