Buried Hearts

O travel bound
Tread gently
A million hearts in ground

The Frost Bitten Leaf

O last withering leaf hold on to the bough
Whatever be the terror caused by the lightning
Whatever the ruthless winds may avow
Your glory lies in waiting until spring

The sun did not cross the barrier of cloud
To save you from the tyrant hands of frost
You had the gift of survival endowed
You are breathing still, all isn’t lost

Take courage, hold on, don’t let it go
The earth may prepare the hearse for you
Chilling winds may move you to and fro
The gardener aiming to pick you and throw

That may be true but, if you break in despair
My plea not consider nor my counsel care
The delicate young shoots then who will shield
From the onslaught of the fierce and cruel wind

Rains

It’s raining outside
I can see on my window panes
Rain droplets slide
Inside seemingly dry eyes something triggers rains

Memories are cruel
They don’t spare
O agonizing thoughts! Do not fuel the flame
And waste the gems rare

The storm has been building for ages I know
The despair left no trace of hope’s glow
I wore a smiling face just for show
O unwelcome guest! I bid you to go

Why should I remember the haunting moments?
Why should I recollect the heart wrenching times?
Where are the images that heart enchants?
Where is the melody with rhythm and rhymes?

Go, go, go O clouds of despair
With your deafening noise of lightning and thunder
Lend me your ears and let me declare
I fight aggression, I do not surrender

I can see on my window panes rain droplets glide
Alone in this dreary night and no one by my side
The thundering clouds with menacing deafening pride
O my restless soul the worldly rules abide

The Old Man of Merces1

The Old man of Merces

His wrinkled face bearing slaps of time
His eyes barren like a desert starved of rain
Glittering they must be during his prime
Crumbling body holding spirit in chain

His trembling hands resting on knees
Sinking and floating in thoughts deep
Oblivious of dry leaves falling of trees
Looking exhausted from lack of sleep

Unloved by loved ones abandoned by friends
His profile silhouetted like a ship aground
Tired of beleaguered life’s twists and bends
Wishing his soul ascended the chariot Heaven-bound

A loveless life senseless for him
Agony and heartache ceaseless for him
The society appears as heartless for him
A longer living meaningless for him

My heart urged to stop by and greet
His souring thoughts from confines of chest release
The man with love and compassion treat
But alas my tongue isn’t Portuguese

Each day in the morning cold
The snow-haired I found, resting on a boulder
Wearing a coat lusterless and old
With the muffler around neck hanging over shoulder

After absence of few months as I return
I find him no more on the boulder dozed
Like boiling waters in vapor turn
Seeing everything with eyes closed

With spirit in bondage and soul in chain
The picture of despair in a society blind
The symbol of affliction, anguish and pain
The venerable old man I failed to find

The Concealed Anguish

Take my letter to her, O Messenger!
Yes, totally washed are its words and phrases
A deed of my flooding eyes I couldn’t deter
The tornado of tears accumulated for ages

The storm of anguish concealed in heart
Washed all urges of soul that flowed from pen
The torrents rumbling from the start
Once started couldn’t be stopped there and then

Her perception will be triggered, I am sure
This blank sheet will reveal all that I meant to say
The power of love will her instincts conjure
My feelings, my urges won’t go astray

Tell her, that the lustrous mansion of pride and ego
Is falling to pieces like the house of cards
The dark alleys of life that lost their glow
In a state of disrepair, description beyond words

The King of Diamond has lost the game
A player is lucky to hold the three A’s
Lost is all the glory and fame
Built in years and lost in days

His eyes craving for your enchanting face
The candles of his eyes weep in the desolate nights
Lost is all peace and tranquility’s trace
Your charming features his heart ignites

A few breaths are left in the dying tree of life
With fallen leaves and barren branches entwined
Resuscitate and free it from torments and strife
Be a glow of the dimmed eyes that brilliantly shined

Tell her, the writer awaits your reply
With burning heart and soul alight
Before torments enhance and wounds multiply
And the bird of life takes to wing of flight

The Hunger of Mind

This agony inside the serene mansion of my soul
This flame of desire burning inside my heart
This insatiable craving to unwind the destiny’s goal
This anguish unleashed by my passion’s dart

Encircles my whole being with dreams profound
To scale the skies of glorious imagination
And capture the secrets of words and the ecstasy of sound
Each cajoling, coaxing and tormenting in succession

The horizon of thoughts and the glow of enlightenment
Free of the horrid darkness of despair and desolation
To balance my feelings, my beliefs, my judgment
And discover the ocean of knowledge and information

To fathom and access the unexplored horizon of wisdom
The aura of knowledge dazzling the eyes with exotic shine
The gems and jewels of virtues glittering in the mind's kingdom
To have the intuitive experience of the divine.

Mother

A banyan tree that shields from tropical summer sun
A symbol of selfless love and sacrifice
A preserver of values that modernism has shun
No praise is enough, no gratitude suffice

Her love for her children is like blossom of springs
An angel she appears, a fairy she seems
It’s a symphony for ears, the lullaby she sings
The lullaby that drifts you in the valley of dreams

A teacher, a guide, a philosopher, a friend
An architect, a builder of beauty and grace
A garden of roses that fragrance send
Serenity of a lake where ducklings race

She suckles her babies with white blood of breasts
The hearts yearn for her bosom’s paradise
She strains every nerve, sacrifices her rests
Burning midnight oil with sleepy eyes

The special mothers that God has blessed
Maryam, Khadija, Fatema and Asiya
Women par excellence, mothers at best
Whether in Africa, Asia or the West

Mothers are an oasis in the desert of life
Their love and passion isn’t for display
Chained to the oar in your perils and strife
A shower of rain on a hot summer day
                           ***
(Dedicated to my mother Begum Najmunnesa, who left me alone in this world at the age of twelve and all the mothers whatever caste, creed, colour, religion and nationality they are. I salute them all)

My Departed Friends

Oh! Those whom I loved and cared that left this world
Enjoying the bliss of heaven when my heart wreaths in pain
Free from anguish and agony and attitudes apathetic and cold
Away from burning sunlight of hatred, ruthlessness and strain

My loving parents and my little sister departed one by one
The infinite mercy of the Creator granted them joy of heaven
For me the luscious trees of love gave way to burning sun
The path of life turned thorn infested, rocky and uneven

The lustful demons of merciless world waiting for me on way
My only weapon, my resolute, indomitable will
With God behind my relentlessness I conquered life in a sway
Lonely nights followed crowded days dreary, dreadful still

Then showered on me God’s sagacious and profound recompense
Through love and compassion my beleaguered soul thrived
On desert of life came the rain-filled clouds of loyalty of friends
Roses bloomed, nightingale sang, life’s elegance revived

But happy days are shorter than the morning dew’s life
You Manzoor, Arif, Marghub,.Nisar, Mehmuda, Ismat, Harry and Jo.
Who were spared the pains of this world of conflicts and strife.
Tranquility of heaven is your destiny, Aftab, Ferreira and Remigio

Your abode has elegant pink shadows and golden sunlight
Fragrant rivers and gardens with flowers of colors unseen
Pebbles of emeralds and rubies present the sight’s delight
Gushing fountains, silvery lakes, hills and valleys ever green

These bounties are rewards of goodness and your virtuous deeds
Your kindness, your compassion, and your illuminated soul
The Creator, most merciful and benevolent gifts beyond one needs
More than lofty aspirations and much beyond your goal.

Happy though I am for you I must still complain
Why you chose to desert me; why you left alone
The leaping flame of loneliness is my destiny again
The path to eternal bliss you took, to me you should have shown

I Love You

In summer night when the sky is blue
When in hearts passions ignite
When the clouds shower a sprinkle or two
When desires brighten the darkness of night

When in the skies the stars wink
When butterflies sleep and night bird’s awake
When fountains flow with serenity’s drink
When the sound of breathing, the silence break

When thoughts are dressed in colorful gowns
When the breeze is pregnant with love’s fragrance
When the time in the lake of enchantment drowns
When in ecstasy the whirling Sufis dance

When my soul in agony of despair writhes
When swords of loneliness are out of sheaths
I care not whether false or true
Whisper in my ears, “I love you”

The Obstinate Heart

My desolate heart, my obstinate friend
Do not be naïve, please understand
That glittering faces you mustn’t eye
Everything enchanting is not thy

You fret, fry, burn and agonize
Your cravings, wailing and your cries
That incessantly my patience try
Years elapse but do not die

You keep no malice and hatred I know
Your loyalty and fidelity and feeling’s flow
Your kindness, your benevolence is aglow
Your transcendent face your virtues show

Unattainable Stars and moon aspires
One can’t get whatever he desires?
The clouds, the sky and colors of rainbow,
The fragrant roses that beauty bestow.

Peace, tranquillity, serenity and more
All that is lost is knocking at door
Share with others or own and keep.
But to your maladies no one will weep

Take my advice although it’s tough
Love without seeking repayment in love
