Freedom

FREEDOM This mass of land, created from the amalgamation of two Stood alone as the most eastern Caribbean island in view Embedded with coral and volcanic ash, her strength A peaceful place to inhabit and explore at length ** The onset of tragedy lingered, with the Colonisation of old As the Brits sought their heritage and desired a foothold This peaceful land beyond, was never to be A sanctuary for innocence nor tranquility ** Across the treacherous seas they sailed Complete with cargo of Settlers and Slaves entailed To till the land for sugar cane, cotton and tobacco fields Never to accede below the demanded yields ** For eons the Masters dominated the sugar trade Reaping from the backs of the weary and unpaid They ruled the downtrodden with relentless fear Until spoke that death of reign was near ** The unforgiving natural disasters took its toll Leaving this precious land with nothing more To take, to trade or yield again Save the memory of inhumane pain ** Exodus from the fields agone, made way For education and the hunt for insurgence at bay Abolition, rebellion and emancipation ensued And this beloved land, Barbados was liberated prelude "FREEDOM" (Barbados gained internal independence from the British Monarchy in 1966) By: Liz Ward

A Caribbean Morn

A Caribbean Morn
I watch as the sun comes in gracefully like the opening of a hibiscus, waiting to bloom. As the aurora radiates above the trees black birds flock, blotting the dawning skies; constantly perched looking out, like soldiers guarding the never ending shoreline. Golden rays prance across the rippling deep as flying fish skim the salty surface. The tide is low this morn, leaving sea treasures scattered ashore like gifts imparted by the unknown. Giant turtles glide under the ocean's summit, granting a glimpse of the endangered out there. Here comes the early sea bathers, the elderly holding hands wading out in the shallow blue. Loud din from the fisher-folk rising from afar Soon boats will launch and calm will return to the peaceful and tranquil morn, when I can hear the rustling of the bladed orchestra swaying to the beat of the cool island breeze. This is the start of a Caribbean Morn. **** Written by: Liz Ward June 30th, 2016

For My Mother

For My Mother Although you are not here with me today, Mom On quiet nights, I sometimes remember How you held my hand and led the way Those past years never to be forgotten When I was lost, your words of encouragement Guided me to the narrow path of fulfillment And now that I am grown, I look back To see you, Mom, my Knight in shining armor When times were hard, you fought your misty eyed tears How difficult it must have been to hide your most inner fears And even though you needed love and comforting too Your sacrifices were for me, unselfish and without thought of you You taught me to never give up, always be myself each day To follow my dreams, not letting anything stand in my way I will try my best but you know it's not easy for me, Mom To follow in your footsteps, but I'll never let you down And now that you are no longer here for me to say I look upon my children with the hope that someday, They can understand why I often look at the stars for you, An Angel, still guiding and forever watching over us too ****** Gone But Not Forgotten I thank you Mom! My Blessing

My Blessing She's my first born, now seven years old A child with so much love to share Her pure heart was worth the pain first endured Treasured memories to have and forever hold ~ A special Blessing, this precious child is to me Her birth has changed my life forever As each day passes, I more clearly see How lucky we are to have her, a part of our family ~ She has her father's smile that brightens her face And a carefree charm that gets her her own way If only I could share this feeling of gratitude and content With all those who need their own blessing someday By:Liz Ward

Friends

FRIENDS As the days go by, and another year ends It's comforting to know that you still have Friends Waiting, willing and always there to lend a hand Through thick or thin in any way they can ~ True for some while others are not A hope for trusted Friends in all the ones you've got Together you'll face the ups and downs of life ahead Grateful for the support from those in good stead ~ A Friend is someone you can count on To be there when everyone else has gone If you are lucky to have found one tried and true friend Hold on tight and build a relationship that could never end ~ Be a Friend to someone in need today Reach out and touch them; show them that you care And someday when you really, really need a friend You'll then know how much you were appreciated for just being there ~~ By: Liz Ward
