Not On My Complexion

Take me back to the days
Where the feel of texture and distinguishing colors among Africans didn't matter
Where the only word was black, and not pale or darker
Where the only weapon was loyalty upto royalty actually smarter
Where mother toung superiority excelled the rest was after.
Where rituals and ceremonies were significant in culture
Where oral traditions activities was a preservation of history.
Where inclusivity wasn't done based on tribe, status or age
Where inspiration and education was passed from generation to generation through storytelling.
Where people performed rather than spoke
Where the media was the speaker's tone, volume, and cadence

Take me back to the days
Where people did not blame nationality, ethnicity,
culture, economics and education
Where there was no colonial domination
Where there was no concept of slavery, racism or discrimination.
Where Africa was rich in culture and not the fallacy of primitive and a backward jungle
Where Africa was peaceful and not a race with guns and violent.
Where shouting am black and proud wasn't important because color didn't matter.
Where respect for elders remained an unbroken cornerstone in african culture
Where birth, marriage and burial rites was honored.

Welcome to the days
Where exporting and importing of cultures have become the trend
Where cultures travel through deserts, cross trade routes and through immigration borders
Where exchange disregards our notions of geography and race.
Where virtues such as hospitality, empathy, courtesy and respect is long gone
Where the only thing left are byproducts of culture.
Where multiculturalism has faded and everone hails on becoming one
The richness is not in Africa looking like Europe
What makes the world beautiful is in the diverse contributions

Welcome to the days
Where culture is paraded on an image of drum beating
Where media's notion is dancing naked or eating bush meat
Where in the midst of it all culture lost its definition
Where there is no importance in defending a territory with no boundaries.
Where technology dominated our land and mind
The struggle lies in reclaiming what is rightfully ours
I refuse to fall and cramble because I'm for the idea of sameness.
In the mind is where it all starts
I put no blame on culture, not my affliction.

Addiction I Got a Second Chance

I'm not the same, from the way you say
I'm not to blame, but I have to pay
Only I was naive, and you took advantage
But I will achieve, to a higher percentage
You blocked my path, to diminish my dreams
And from your wrath, they caused my screams
Writhing in pain, for you thought was my destiny

I'll let you celebrate, if that's your will
But I'll not tolerate, the change of how I feel
When I fell apart, you came to my life
And now we part, this time for life
Indeed you said, I'd see your wonder
But now I'm saved, from the spark of thunder
The covenant is over, for I've realized my destiny

They said you're great, but I know you deceive
And because of my fate, I had to believe
A sip and a puff, was all like a rhythm
To sleep and to laugh, was all like a film
To sit and to walk, I couldn't distinguish
For you put a lock, the charm I couldn't extinguish
But now I walk away, for my dream awaits me

Forget our little secret, for now I've reformed
For now it's too late, for I'm informed
There is always a second chance, for those who've lost hope
Sometimes its once, so take it when it popes.

The Legend Between the Lines

The drum beats were heard from far
The music filled the air, everybody sang
In the household of kimunyi a son was born
Indication of a stronghold in the society
That he was the heir and supreme shareholder of the property
Heir! Heir! In every mouth that was the pride of the family
To be the pillar of the family and hold it gladly
Like the trumpets blown during the festivals
Their heartbeats blew happiness rhythmically entwined

Their dreams for him were big and hopeful
They entrusted their dreams to him purposefully for the generation to come
Indebted to them he was and he wouldn't bring them down
He grew with an extraordinary physique bold and strong
Profound in the ways of the society never going wrong
But between the dreams and visions of his family
And the society his dreams surfaced
He became like a fulcrum unable to balance
Between his visions and that of the society
In his dreams he wanted a different life
He wanted to unburden himself of the responsibility
And like a Wonderer he found himself in the city

He was naive not familiar with the new ways
But under that primitive skin there was purpose
The bridge between the two worlds was created
He was burned from the society
And no matter how much he wanted there was no going back
He pulled carts he swept the streets but he got stronger
Then between the lines he cut across
And he crossed the river
The legend between the lines

It Was Just a Dream

I was standing at the edge
I saw it coming
I could smell its scent
I had this feeling at the pit of my stomach

My heart was taking forever
Slow but sure it was coming to a halt
Death was knocking
The heart beat began to slow
It was so faint I could hardly hear it

My knees weakened
And I was crumbling
Slowly I was falling
I was dyeing yet still standing
My sight blurred
My hands were in a tight fist

I was holding my self
I was lifting my self
For a moment I thought I could
But I was wrong
My being was loosing its strength
Life had given up on me

A scream pierced the atmosphere
I was dying
The wailings were louder
I was dead

I was panting my breadth heavy
I was crying and I couldn't stop the tears
I was mourning my own death
Then my eyes flew open
No no but I'm dead
It was just a dream.

Being Pushed To the Edge

She was standing so close yet so far
She was so confident that she'd never shed another tear
Perhaps she was over confident
That she forgot and lost her foot
The world around her was spinning
And so she spun along with it

It was too long
Yet its like time had come to a stand still
They say time is supposed to heal
But to her the wounds were still fresh
Its just like it happened yesterday
The feeling so toxic that it chocked her
The tears were unwilling to sooth her anymore
For she had become undesirable

She was breaking piece by piece
And slowly she was crumbling
Going back to where she came from
Just like they say
And we shall return back to the soil
And each one of us say Amen

She died a dead log
Wasted and an unexplained being
It was so saddening
None of us could hold their tears back
And the spades scooped simultaneously
As though rhythmically entwined
We all sang with sadness blanketing above us

And with that she was gone
Her pains and sorrows
Buried along with her
Her death remained a history
To be taken down to the young ones
She was no hero
Yet she evoked sympathy from people's hearts
Her death was no accident
She was killed by you and me

Walking Dead

When the lights go off
I just wanna hide my face
When the lights are on
I just wanna bury myself
Least they see my sorrows
The streak of tears
The agony written on my face
Walking but not feeling my legs
Its like walking dead

When I try to lift my head
They scare me back to my hole
No mercy I cry injustice
He stole my cow
But the judge ruled on his favor
He robed my house
And got away with it
His son married my daughter
Without my consent
And got away with it
No Mercy I cry injustice
Its like walking dead

I watched as poverty struck
My efforts drained to nothing
My years of hardworking
Reduced to ashes
I got up ready to avenge
And take back all that was mine
But misfortune gave me no chance
I lifted my sword and slashed his head
He who stole my cow
And down went all the heads
Of those who did me wrong
I sought justice for myself

Then they were all after me
The families sought vengeance too
And I had no choice
But to run for my dear life
Now I'm a Wonderer
Heading to no specific destination
Its like walking dead

Black Or No Black

When I was a child I would smile broadly
But now that I'm old I don't
Everything that was dark
I saw it so colorful and beautiful
I would smile to everyone
And when they smiled back
It was amazing
But what I didn't know
The world is cruel

I wanted to play with every child
But their mothers would carry them inside
I never saw it as a big deal
Till today is when I understand better
That my color was my enemy
Until they told me I was black
The color that would neither
Splash nor smear on them
This is ridiculous
But now I know
The world is cruel

You think I'm black
I think you lack color
I was just a child
But no mercy to the innocent
What do you call that
But now I'm old enough
And I stand my ground
Black or no black
You will respect my position on earth
And now that I know
No more cruelty

The Tragedy of Marionette Onu

The cameras flickered all over the place
But to only one direction were they intended
The figure that stood like a sculpture
Like displayed gold that everyone tried to get a glimpse
Marionette onu! The big heroine
She was known for her big charity works
Helping millions of the needy people out there
Establishing schools, hospitals, care centers for the old
And the praises spread like the harmattan winds
Across the world her name filled many parts
Shopping centers, public vehicles were named after her
Even the children born at her age followed suit

She was outstanding, elegant and admirable
She was a role model, someone to be looked up to
Many inspiration materials were written by her
On this very fine day she received many awards
And everyone agreed that she deserved the honours
Marionette onu beamed to the cameras
And at that moment everything else seized to exist
What people didn't know was that she was a misery
No one had tried to unravel the true marionette onu
She was not whom they thought she was
Inside she was a broken being
And slowly she was fading, falling deeper into her sorrows

Many seasons passed and as her name spread further
Marionette onu seized to exist with each passing day
She was too scared to talk to anyone
Least they discover her fears and weaknesses
And just like that she got weaker inside
Although on the outside she was the heroine marionette onu
She strived to keep the title
And with that she dug the hole deeper
And just one morning she couldn't take it anymore
She wore her best attire applied makeup
And all ready and set up she hanged herself

Till today the death of marionette is still a misery
No matter which angle people try to view it
It is still a knot untied
The death of marionette onu
A history to be taken down to generations
It was a tragedy
An unknown tragedy

Shattered Dreams

I walk past them
Whistling the national anthem
My body with me but my mind far away
Thinking of how I would get away
From this immoral society
Of strikes and solidarity
She has a baby in her back
Walking aimlessly with him around the park
So confident she seems

If wonders would seize
Them the world would come to a halt
Young woman, have you lost direction?
Do you remember?
Do you remember those early days?
When we were still young and innocent?
When the teacher would ask. Asha what would
You like to be when you grow up?
You would shout
When I grow up I would like to be a teacher,
A pilot endlessly

Is this what you would teach your kids?
Giving them a bad example?
Is this how you would fly your plane?
Definitely it would crumble
Your mother cries each day
For what is done cannot be reversed
You let them use you
And now they no longer want to see you
You walk head held high
Claiming that you don't care
Heed not to the advice and you will wish you knew
Young woman, your dreams are shattered

Devotee To the Present Age

You wake up panting and its just like awakening from the dead
A bruised lip and monsters tearing each other in your head
Boom! And just like that you are out of your bed
Running as though chased by the werewolves
Who've just burst out of their own clothes
And split their own clothes now on their true wolves

Fast! Screaming loudly as though possessed
The demons rejoicing through your filthy mouth
Interesting long-legged mashed head cursed
Those popping eyeballs mouth-blooded cursed
Immorality you sound like a cursed preacher
Up and down talk to that being facing you

Stumbling over bricks, walking on egg shells
Freedom! Freedom! They mouth it power
Young and hungry interesting they sing
Wrinkles hidden under the heavy powder
Eye lashes heavy as the clouds pleading to let go
Noses trimmed and plastic faced, Dead
It's so intriguing yet saddening

Undesirable down to short of description.
Pathetic close to an understatement
Beauty is a wink close yet a million miles away
Facing the other side its like a prank
But when reality knocks
The breeze gets stuffed the situation suffocating
