Driftwood

Still dusted with sleep or sand,
The daydreams wash away with the tide falling out,
I'll rise to wander this lonely drifting shore,
Gather belongings and clarity of sight,
If I could stay I'd never leave again,
And who's to say I cannot?

When I was but much younger than today,
You made me gather things then and walk away,
And when I asked why,
Why we all had to go,
Why I alone could not stay,
You told me the air was wrong.

So many airs I've gasped as since then,
All just as potent,
None quite as palatable,
But to go back and fill lungs once more,
I'd hold breath until my words had been replaced,
By golden grains of dust and misty ocean,
And I'd forget your lure and lies,
Like fish pulling away from hook,
Why come up for air when I breathe something more?

I'll forget about stuffing years into black plastic bags,
Forget how every moment after these was struggles,
Let it all go,
Let you go,
And float off beaches like driftwood,
Happier than childhood ever couldn't be,
Happy without you to rope tie me and carry me over shoulders,
Away from all light and destiny.

But a speck on an endless blue,
I'll look to the edge of sky,
And dream I colored inside these lines,
Losing all focus,
Losing all sight,
My fate is hers now.

At Arms Length

Love.

A few too many breaths of fresh air,
A sun over water shines a glimmer in your hair,
A palm reaching outward quickly to hold,
A pointed and true reason to want to grow old,
A scent of coming rain sweet enough to see,
A sobering storm I'm willing to weather...

As long as you're with me.

Hope.

As tried as I've been and held down as we are,
The eclipse of this lifetime will surely fail to burn out our star,
We are young and yet old enough to make something real,
As long as we retain these once muttered feelings that we feel,
We are strong, stronger than the values of the things that we own,
And I'd give them all up to take your heart...

On a loan.

Love.

I will never back down or let go or give up or give in,
Always twice a loser it's more than time to win,
I will never break or falter or wane,
I will hold you at arms length to measure this rain,
Because despite its depth and the flood that we swim,
We didn't just fall this hard as a joke...

On a whim.

Hope.

Is always...

Enough.

In a Moment

There's a million little molecules and particles of pieces of things I never even knew,
Breaths of air and ashes filled with hopes and fears,
The taste of honey and the silent yet droning ringing in my ears,
And I can't wake up if waking up means being awake,
Because there is a peace in this life that someone's willing to take,
Stealing is one thing but destroying with purpose is another,
No matter how diluted or succumbed to evil that reason may be.

So many,
So many electric little sparks of light in my eyes,
I can't see beyond my scope of life,
You know it's just a field of one hundred and fifty feet,
In any direction even if you are there to see,
So take my expansive yet narrow view of the world,
And expand on my visions to bring change to new lives,
And I don't want to breathe if breathing means taking away,
From some other poor soul that's waiting to breathe today,
Or some life that is breathing for the very first time,
And here I am wasting their precious first words on this rhyme,
I can't leave this once lonely moment alone,
Because being alone isn't even possible in this place,
Look around you one second and see someone else's face,
And if you can't see that far or far enough to take in,
Then get somewhere closer and breathe something in,
Because life isn't lonely or sad or meant to be lived all alone,
We are all parts of a puzzle waiting for you to bring home,
And home is truly wherever your heart is,
Just come home,
Don't live for this moment just to die making a stand,
Against something that someone has no choice but to be,
Or someone else's happiness and every little victory,
Because your life is so somber and you can't find love,
Open your eyes and see that the entirety of everything you see is made of pure love,
You are loved,
So love back...

Don't hate.

Don't... Fight everything.

Don't be sad and alone.

Feel life everywhere you go,
Live life everyday,
Part of something far more.

Neither Or Nor

Here.

I will give all,
All for less,
Less.

Ask more of what?
What of the rest?
Rest to break,
Break.

Trivial with purpose,
Purpose to give,
Give more,
More for you,
You.

There.

Enlightened - An Abecedarian Work

Absolute are the commands you’re given,
Being told is easier than telling yourself,
Capture your given freedoms,
Demand more than simple life,
Endings are only and end if you reach them,
Forgetting certainly helps,
Gather yourself and come back later,
Have a little more strength if you do,
In the stead of your previous strife,
Just be more than you were before,
Kismet is only just one way,
Love doesn’t have to be a dream,
Miracles aren’t entirely impossible,
Nothing has to stop you,
Only you can stop you,
People will likely try harder than you do,
Quit allowing them to control anything,
Rebirth your true self and be free,
Sunsets and dawns to come will matter even more,
True happiness and enlightenment will you find,
Under the guise of what you once feared to be,
Very much like you were told not to,
Welcoming this new life is,
Xenial your heart can now be,
You can do anything,
Zeal and zest for the life you now lead.

Reflections

I wonder if looking up and into eyes gives away my meaning,
As if I can be defined by the window of my gaze,
Or if it is mere reflections of others that crafts assumptions,
The fact that emotions are peerless though everyone carries strife,
Most of us are mortally wounded,
Gripping at handrails shuffling into a shallow grave,
Ironically, it's our lives that are killing us so dreadfully quick,
The woes and worries of a million or a billion others all on our shoulders,
We fight and struggle and push onward,
And when we complain a shadow whispers not to cry so loudly,
Though we bleed tears of disillusionment with the state of all things,
We are not alone enough to withstand this battle,
And togetherness is far more important than it seems,
Yet we avoid one another and ignore the pleas for help,
Despite familiarity with their direness,
Simply because we assume ourselves to have seen greater troubles,
But no one is as troubled as we are as a whole,
No one person, regardless of ego can stand above all else,
And call themselves the very nature of melancholy,
As if the rest of humanity isn't just as pitifully sad,
Perhaps quite often the fleeting moments of happiness are enough to keep many afloat,
But it is the choices we make with the portrayal of joy that affect how the world views us,
And therein how we, as individuals can view ourselves.

Tete-A-Tete

There’s just something about rage,
Furious and focused,
Real yet fleeting,
Gaze into an eye of anger,
So separate from the other,
Driven back,
Cold yet unsure,
Direction given,
Stern and overcast with doubt,
Wanting to be heard,
Not out of need,
Out of desire,
Pure power lust,
Looking back now it’s noticed,
Stuttering vocal inflections,
Demands scribbled in the air,
And a look of distaste,
Knowing it’s not at all true,
Saying it anyway.

There’s just something about defiance,
Rushing in eardrums,
Allowing such stoic sight,
Causing more than trouble,
Fueling the slip of mouth,
We all know why this happened,
Why this course runs bare,
For the pleasure of another,
Or selfish gains,
Mostly gains,
Monotony broken,
And getting a kick out of it,
Forgetting just the purpose,
Recalling most the feeling,
Asking a fairness,
In an unfair manner,
Perhaps it’s hatred,
Or anything more than displeasure,
Yours to take.

My Sky

If I had a star for every moment I wasn't what I could be,
I would hang them all high,
Fists unclenched,
Only to have a wonder,
As bright as Montana big sky,
And there in the midst of the other side of day,
I'd hold on so closely,
To the splendor,
The absoluteness of a dream,
That is only but kismet,
For the comforts I've seen,
But if there's darkness,
Void of cool light,
Or I've taken for granted,
Unbeknownst to me,
Then I'll give it all back,
I'll pluck down my stars stuffed in pockets and hands,
And pay back the world that I've wronged,
With all that I have.

Socially Acceptable

Men grow beards to feel more free,
But looking like a caveman isn't freedom,
It just means you'll always have soup on your face,
Nor does sipping softly on organic green tea,
Or turning a book to page ninety to seem more accomplished than those around you,
Smoking electronic cigarettes for the sake of your health,
Or loving the planet just a bit more than every school kid you'll ever meet,
Pecking away at keys on whichever fruit related piece of plastic now controls your life,
Signing petitions but never quite handing them in,
Despite the four hundred and thirty two other believers in grass fed donkey,
Published support in one hundred forty symbols,
Hashtag vote for Zombie Lincoln,
If that guy's still alive,
Or maybe Hulk Hogan because 'Oh! I take vitamins too!'
Planting a tree in someone else's yard,
Because it's your land too yes it is,
And it's time to save it!
We're all drowning in ourselves but don't forget to save it!
Craned necks lead to hunchbacks,
You'll find yourself perpetually always looking down,
So amused by 'life' that you forgot about living,
The only stars that you see are dancing on TV,
And the only water you'll drink has been filtered at least fifteen times right from your tap,
But it costs more so it must mean more,
It must mean more,
It just has to.

Forks - Raw Contest Entry

I've stepped out of this moment before,
When the little things start to become so overwhelmingly big,
And the smiles on our faces shift down to cordial grins.

I've driven this path long before,
Stumbled over pebbles and boulders,
Bits of emotions that fell away,
Some which we had to give up,
Call it compromise.

I've swallowed all of this pride before,
Like choking back tears and blood,
Eyes dry with dust from long nights spent wondering,
Debating alternatives,
Tuning these now much larger little things out,
For the sake of loyalty and love.

I've tasted this bitterness much before,
And spit out the words of distaste,
Leaving hearts and hopes behind in my wake,
Those content minor moments replaced with silence,
Replaced with somber distractions.

I've never known this love before,
To actually fix things that shatter,
Amends and trying,
Worlds apart from ages and naivety long ago,
Able to hold onto what's simple and obvious,
And if it gets too cold,
I'll warm your hands anyway.
