Adversity

Adversity has many names,
Sized from minuscule to monumental,
Creeping in unnoticed,
Hiding behind life's little annoyances.

Adversity,
Balloons at the worst possible moment,
Taking everyone by surprise,
Left standing in total shock.

Adversity,
Cutting to the core,
Leaving scars
That never heal.

Adversity,
Spreading a shroud of darkness,
A heavy burden on the shoulders,
A Millstone around the neck.

"Adversity," He says,
As He puts His arm around me,
Drawing me closer to His side,
Whispering, "Don't worry, we'll get through this together."

Retirement

Teaching
Class
English
Teenagers
Doors slams shut
Bells ring for the last time.
Directions?
Time?
Questions?
Decisions?
Uncertainty?
The term
Retirement
Looms in the shadows
Its face no definition.
Boundaries?
Guidelines?
I hear God's soft small whisper
Brushing past my ear,
It's Ok, we'll figure this out
Together.

My Name

Disappointment
So deep it severs the heart strings.
Pain
So sharp it cuts right to the core.
Doubt
squeezing out the breath of life.
Confusion
As to the choices made.
Panic's arrows
Piercing the curtain of silence.
Depression
Settling like a shroud of darkness.
Shame
For the person you've become.
Guilt
Because you can't break free.

Alcohol's my name,
Destruction's my game.

Life

Life’s
Unpredictable,
Earth-shattering at times,
Interspersed with uncanny calm.
Life’s
Peaks ‘n’ valleys,
Curves ‘n’ straight-a-ways,
Hairpin turns ‘n’ lazy “S”s.
It takes a steady hand
To navigate the journey.
Unwavering balance
To conquer the narrow path.
An unrelenting gait
For striding toward the goal.
Eyes focused on the prize.
Arms reaching for assistance.
He sees my plight,
He walks to me,
He grasps my hands
And leads me through the clutter.

He Is Waiting With Open Arms

When the sun rises each morning,
The day begins.
And when the sun sets and the moon rises,
The day ends.

But it's what lies between
The light and the darkness
Is the problem.

The decisions, the choics made,
The actions, the behaviors shown
Are the keys.

Do we have a leader?
Is there someone we can follow?
Who will lift our head
When our eyes look to the ground?

Who will give us hope.
When things look hopeless"
Who will forgive us when we stray?
Who will wipe our tears away when our heart aches?

There is an answer to our problems,
There's someone who will wipe away our tears,
He is the light our of the darkness,
He is the hope for tomorrow!

His name is Jesus
And He waits with open arms.
There's nothing we have done that He won't forgive.
LISTEN! Can you hear Him? He's calling our names.

Life

Life.
In which direction will it go?
Retirement.
Its definition?
Its meaning?
Work.
Does it define me?
Make me who I am?
How do I make sense of it all?
My place in the scheme of things?
An end of an era looms in the near future
Life as I know it close to the end.
Retirement
A path never before taken
Horizons to search
Possibilities to discover
New worlds to explore.

But in the process,
I don't want to lose myself.

Addiction

The door slammed shut,
I have to do this
On my own,
She cried.
I'll go to a meeting
When I need to,
Don't ask!
You know I hate that!
When I saw her
She looked good,
More relaxed,
Her old self peeking through.
My hope's
That she'll continue
Seeking who she was
Not who she became.
Addiction sneaks upon you
So easy to let in
Yet so difficult
To break the hold.

Life

Life
So mysterious,
Revealing no secrets.
If only a small hint
Of what tomorrow holds
Would wipe away the tension,
Releasing Stresses' hold.
Anticipation level's high,
What to except, where to go,
Nervous exhaustion setting in.
I'm too hung up on the future,
Can't see a need for the present.
I'm in need of help, but from where
Will help come?
He says, "Do not fear tomorrow.
Don't relive the past.
Stay in the moment
Enjoying the gift of the day."

Friendship

Friendship
Withstands life's storms and showers,
Applauds when the sun shines,
Extends a hand when life's road runs rough,
Offers a shoulder when life gets heavy,
Cries when life hits a bump,
Remains beside
"Just in case."
