God Complex

We are barely a whisper in the voice of the Earth
Barely a flicker in the candle of the Sun
Not even significant in the life of the stars
And yet, we feel as though we are so important
So proud of our meager accomplishments
On this tiny, tiny rock
Floating utterly alone in the universe

Drones

Pawns move on no account of their own
Two steps ahead, one step back
Replaceable
Yet seemingly important to the game
What a life they live
Believing they choose for themselves where to go
What to become
But every move is measured
Every step carefully watched, planned
By a King
The game could go on without them
Bishop against Rook
Queen against King
So why do they sit
Waiting for orders
Forward
They cannot look back
Cannot travel side to side
One choice
Illusioned into many
Forward
Attack
With the royalty silently urging them onward
With fear of consequence
That does not truly exist
It is only a game
And if the King fell
The pawns could not survive
For they are mindless
Though numbered as the sands of the sea
Without a purpose
They would drown

Hydroxyzine

A slowly sinking ship that makes no sound
A broken clock with hands that do not turn
An octopus with eight arms dragging down
This is the life from poor choices I earn
Sedative side effects hold me so tight
While vivid dreams plague my unconscious mind
But it's that, or insomnia, this night
And bad sleep is better than fear, I find
One tiny pill voids me of emotion
Drowning the pain I hold so deep inside
Calmness comes down like waves of the ocean
Bringing relief though damaging my pride
This is my new life, full of much panic
Trapped in the mind of someone who's manic

Horror

We are the serpents that lie in wait behind closed doors
Only partially hidden by masks that litter a floor
Piled high with “good” intentions
Disguised as friends and lovers
We cheat to win the game that everybody loses
We are the nightmares of our own design
Unconscious of the extent of our flaws
Until our clothes are stained with the blood
Of those we crushed to pull ourselves higher
We are the savage and superb
Torn in two by the souls that dwell within us
We are the murdered
But also the murderers
The innocent child
And the sociopathic serial killer
Content with life
Yet begging to die
We create the very sins we try so hard to resist
And the heartfelt actions we shower in praise
There is no god to judge us
There is no devil to lure us
There is only humankind.

Wound

Not unlike the hands on a clock
We constantly move forward
And yet go nowhere
Playing a game with time
As we wander around in circles
Until our batteries run out.
