A Wayward Heart

The summer rain fell softly upon me as I traveled along
I felt alive and energized and I began to sing an old song
The weeping willows stand as statues of a forgotten past
The flower garden, with its' angel fountain, glows as I pass

The rain gave way to a bright sunny day indeed
I rushed away each of these precious moments, there was no need
I found a turtle by the walk, I let him go on by
I see everything so clearly it makes my heart cry

Beckoning my soul is the song of the bluebird far away
His gentle song tugs at my heart along my way
I chisel a little more of my sad past as I go
Oh Lord, help this country boy clear his soul

Picadilly Laughter

Cranberry dreams upon a blue silk pillow of yore
Strawberry smiles upon faces young and poor
White lace trimming along the edges of a yellow dress
Caramel smells waft and giggle a nose to caress

Gentle raindrops caressing my cheek on a pretty day
Holding onto the moment as the sky goes to a dark gray
Floating white clouds nudging at my heart
Summer smells of barbecues with childish laughter

Piccadilly sounds, harmony in tune with my mind
I have magic at each window of fun I find
A beckoning soul leading me to laugh evermore
Carolers with multicolored faces; fun for all

A New Day

I see the whispers of a new day upon the dew laden ground
I must awaken my soul to the new start that I have found
Way beyond the valley floor I seek a new day
I travel lightly as I wander and begin to pray

Sketched among the larkspur and daffodils I find solace
I wander to an ageless maple tree and find quiet justice
Yonder above a time worn cliff I see magic brewing
An eagle and its young are beginning breakfast chewing

Wandering along I see Gods' magic paintbrush everywhere
Tokens of a new beautiful day is upon me to share
I kindle my restless heart with a truth in knowing
That I have found my savior at what He is showing

When the Angels Call

I release my soul upon this hallowed ground
I find my mind racing to the memory I have found
I see mama as she waves to me from afar
I wave an unsteady hand at a distant star

Love surrounds me as I travel from dream to dream
I shed no more tears as I wander, or so it would seem
Youth far away and gone I now see my grandpas face
A dream with a smile cast upon my soul, a mere trace

Try as I might I cannot explain the warm tears
There is truth in my eyes chasing away my fears
How sweet and happy those things of which I dream
My mamas sweet hugs cover my heart like strawberry cream

I find my shadow has long since departed my soul
Mama whispers angel songs before I once more go
Wandering back to earth I find a locket of gold,I arise again
Wanting to get to heaven, now my only worldly sin

Valentine

Chipmunks jump, and
Green snakes slither,
Rather burst than
Not be with her.

Bluebirds fight, but
Bears are stronger.
We have fifty
Years or longer.

Hop toads hop, but
Hogs are fatter.
Nothing else but
Us can matter

A Country Memory

Purple gumdrops in a crystal flowered bowl
Needlepoint left in a rocking chair, maybe for show
Lace curtains in the parlor, ageless and refined
Stockings of gray hung on the mantle so defined

White candlesticks sitting upon the black marble mantle
Clear as day the front doorbell rings, a melody soft and gentle
Aromas of gingerbread mingle with an air of peppermint
Cuddling in Grandpas' lap, sighing softly with contentment

Checkerboard laid across an old antique table of yore
Kissing Grandmas' cheek, getting a hug and many more
Playing in mud puddles, pushing little cars in the sand
Swinging on an old tire swing, loving Gods' land

My Mamas Prayer

Away beyond the distant mountain valleys of yore
I see my mamas face entwined in my heart evermore
Her soft and warming smile nurtures my soul
I see the beautiful lilies where the gentle stream flows

Mama, you sure had a way with loving this land
Your gentle nature steadied your loving hand
Sugar cookie dough caked upon a stained apron of blue
Lots of memories thrown into a mix of grace and prayer to

Mama had to go to heaven to help the angels sing
I hold in my trembling hand a locket, a gracious thing
Her prayers helped a wayward son live a life without pain
Oh mama, I just want to hear you pray again

A Rekindled Memory

I stand amid the flowers of a time gone by
I search my thoughts, not wanting to cry
Haunted by a memory so tender and sore
I still my heart as my knees begin to shake more

Her pretty smile is but a distant flavor gone sour
Maybe if I banish these memories ever more
My healing would know comfort and peace
Yet, somehow the graceful love would cease

Gentle raindrops begin to fall upon a cloudy head
I search to no end for shelter to relinquish my dread
A haven somewhere that I may find her again
Her captivating beauty in my heart my only friend

As I walk slowly away from the small mound
My desperate tears flow unleashed to the soft ground
I awaken dying strength to put her locket upon the stone
I look up to see the rain was gone, I am still alone

A Lavender Day

A Lavender Day

Lilacs and lavender bouquets held in a tiny hand
Blue and yellow striped dresses playing in the sand
Magic moments to share on a bright sunny day
Merry-go-round spinning dreams in every way

Blue overalls on young boys with muddy faces
Girls with yellow dresses who like their pretty laces
Gentle rain falling yet not washing away the fun
Here comes the teacher, and out comes the sun

Little bonnets worn carefully to mask out the sun
Galoshes squeak as the boys laugh and try to run
Watermelon days with so much to do
God planned this day just for me and you

After the Storm

Soft yellow-gray light of early morning,
Butter and wool
The two bedroom windows
Still beaded and streaked with rain.

The world calm again, routine with traffic,
After its night of convulsions,
When storm drains closed at the throat,
And trees shook in the wind like the hair of dryads.

In the silent house, its roof still on,
Too early for the heat to come whistling up
And the guest room still closed,
I am propped upon these pillows.

A gray moth-eaten cashmere jersey
Wrapped around my neck
Against the unbroken cold of last night.
I am thinking about the dinner party.

The long table, dark bottles of wine,
The odd duck and brussels sprouts,
And how, after midnight,
With all of us sprawled on the couch and floor.

The power suddenly went out
Leaving us to feel our way around
In the tenth-century darkness
Until we found and lit a stash of candles.
