The 50's

There was a time when I was young
To share an era that begun
From music to the fashion trend
TV shows and history
Fads and other mysteries
I saw them all as time moved on

From classic pop to rock and roll
Bill Haley and the Elvis craze
And four years in my Air Force phase
But Jitterbug still hung around
The big bands had that unique sound
Time moved on to start the clock

European cinema
Fellini, Bergman made the mien
And Japan added to the pie
To film The Seven Samurai
Brando, Newman and James Dean
newly captured on the screen

Television's Golden Age
All the programs set the stage
For Gunsmoke and the Twilight Zone
I love Lucy, I married Joan
TV tubes were changed a lot
Wrestling shows were really hot

Mantle, Mays and Robinson
Took baseball to another rung
The coonskin cap and hula hoop
Duck tail hair and snapper soup
I wore one with a thick pomade
And ate the soup that Momma made

My fashion sense left much to judge
As if I had good taste for fudge
Pegged pants with a six inch rise
Ladys skirts were different then
Lengths that came down to their shins
Three inch higher was a sin
Still dirty minds existed then

In Belgium back in 58
I saw an exhibit on that date
The Sputnik with a cute stray dog
was launched so high up in the air
Before the U.S. could get there
Then the race to conquer space

McCarthy hearings, lives destroyed
The Cold War was our only plight
The Commies kept their nukes in check
And Castro entered on the scene
There were no hot wars left to fight
Days still continued as well as night

I share a new millennium
But today the future's not so bright
No more long hand, the laptop's here
Facebook and Twitter have conquered our sphere
The death knell has tolled for how life was then
Rekindle your past and live again

The Color of Space

The Color of Space

His spaceship alit on a foreign world
deep in the midst of the outer space
two moons gazing down devoid of all air
he kept his mask on and walked down the plank
opened the door to retreat from the hull

He was there for a purpose
for diplomacy’s sake
to seek a new race and find a new place
in hopes that they trade
since the earth needed more
an avatar sought
for the future of lore

The leader approached
his habiliment WHITE
and his face a pale GREEN
he exacted his speech
with authority and grace

I promise the cargo that you request
in the time that is due it will be our best
for our BLUE men work as we command
to produce what you need or they will be replaced
and another blue man will fill in the space
to satisfy your monthly needs

He gazed at the workers bedraggled with sweat
their uniforms worn not a word from their lips
he considered his quest and returned to his ship

He removed his mask and stared out of the hull
he pondered the planet that he will leave
A million miles from Earth and the stigma remains
he grabbed a BLACK towel and wiped his BROWN face
will MANS inhumanity to MAN ever change

The Amazon River

The Amazon River

The Capybara wades the shore
A Wooly monkey climbs a vine
To search for food up on the trees
The Amazon that I adore
Its total nature I will bind
Bromeliads have blushed with love
Blending in the waters shore

The Jaguar stalks to hunt his food
The Anaconda will digest
His conquest on the night before
Humans carefully sense the mood
The Fuana find their time to rest
Anteaters sniff upon the floor
for ants and bugs to sense for food

The Dolphins rise up then they fly
Agressively create a scene
Boats pass on by and view the sight
As a silent Caiman wades on by
The quiet of the night serene
Stars surround the forest night
The Dragonflies decide to fly

Stillness in the eerie night
Nature's forces will blend in
Insects sit on exquisite leaves
A struggle of each species plight
Resplendent as they'll all akin
Coalescing as they interweave
The Amazon and all its might

Machinating the Manger Scene

Machinating the manger scene

The little shepherd sat at night
and kept his sheep within his sight
he gazed up at the starry night
and saw one star was shining bright
onto a solitary manger site
inside a candle gave its light
two images appeared in sight
and in a straw crib was a child
so beautiful with manner mild
encompassed by a sandy drift
he smiled and wished to give a gift
and from a lamb its wool was sheared
with nothing else though he still cared
he rolled it into a wooly ball
a present that he would recall
he saw three figures enter near
and stayed behind to watch with care
gifts were presented with blessed intent
one had offered a pleasant scent
they bowed before them as they went
Mary, the mother saw the boy
and beckoned him to enter in
she thanked him for the little toy
I’ll remember you and the wooly ball
“Your welcome ma’am, my name is Saul”

The Knights Crusade

Dearest damsel, thou art my life
If thou want for food, it will always be there
I will offer confit and other gourmet fare

Whatever jewels ye desire I present to you
Be it Australian opals or Colombian gold
Dearest damsel, thou art are my life

The ravages of nature may threaten ye
But I’ll cool thee in the brutal heat
and warm thee in the bitter cold

I will slay where all the dragons dwell
I'll protect thee from the gates of hell
Dearest damsel, thou art my life

My strength and resolve to win thy love
I will defy the gods above
Until my labors bring fruition

all these enumerations that I have stated
I promise thee with all my heart
Dearest damsel, thou art my life

But thou cannot have my Tapioca

My Lady's Garden

The sun has arisen
To greet the early morn
and drops of dew rest
on the leaves of Eden
The continuous murmur
of a water fount
for wrens to quench their thirst
chirping gossip as the day
moves on and
in her field of promises
she surveys the earthly soil
of what colors to place
and how much time to pursue
an orange hibiscus to the left
a Desert rose to the right
a vandeous orchid on the wall
other species in random
or to lay them in tandem
and slowly they begin to sprout
breaking out of their womb
tapestries of color
joining in a birthday song
and after they flower
she sits for a while
and anxiously waits
to see them smile

Eating Twinkies With God

Eating Twinkies with God

The little boy walked into the park
the sun was shining very bright
he saw a lady old and frail
the sun reflected on her hair
Who is this lady, the little boy thought
with her hair so full of light

With two Twinkies in his bag and a coke in his hand
he walked to the bench and offered her one
she accepted it gladly but no word came from her
except a bright smile and after a while
she had eaten, he shared his coke
and no word came from her except for that smile
then she held onto her cane , rose up and left

The child hurried home and said to his mom
I went to the park and had Twinkies with God
but she was very old, now isn't that odd?
his mom looked at him and said
God touched your heart and you did something nice
you saw God through her face now here's my advice
when you grow up and I am old
just think of the lady in the park

The old lady came home and entered her house
she hung up her cane and said to her spouse
I went to the park and had Twinkies with God
but he was just a child, now isn't that odd?

Thoughts

The Mask it cannot hide
those feelings deep inside
that squeeze the senses tight
to try and recall a
time of love,lust and sin
then you realize now
thoughts are all you have left

Autumn Dance

I watch the red leaf
outside my window
being swept away by the wind
and as the wind subsides
it falls then it's on the move again
in the air dancing at random
mixing with the yellow and brown
then it swirls and rises up
and falls again
with the other leaves on the floor
and after awhile
it does an encore

Ode To the Unsung Hero

Ode to the Unsung Hero

I salute the devotee of his craft
who diligently pursued perfection
with no recognition
but remained true to himself
and trudged along but lost
to the dynamics of politics and the bottom line
He was not in his time and space
of Fame

I lift my glass to her , the Fool
who trusted them with her better idea
only to lose it anyway
but remained true to herself
she knew not how to play
the devious Game.

To the saints unselfish
who cared for humankind
but were overshadowed
by fanatics religious, emirs and kings
Heaven was not theirs
to Claim

The writer not read
and the artist well dead
the writers of music
and the musicians who longed
to play their songs
and share in their glory
but not to be.

So let us applaud them loudly
 they remained true to themselves
let them bask in the sunshine
if for only a brief time
or at least until
the sun goes down.
