Andrew Totten Poem
I went to war in Vietnam which wasn't my idea
the army never asked for my advice
I slogged on through the jungles there and watched some soldiers die
out country where the farmers grow their rice
The months went by like in a horrid dream of blood and death
and nothing I could say made any change
one mission here. one mission there just made no sense to me
but there was no way it would rearrange
We came to do our duty and to save South Vietnam
from communist incursions from the north
The tunnel rats went into where no one should ever go
And daily, squads were sweeping back and forth
The enemy was everywhere so telling friend from foe
was just about the hardest thing to do
then just about the time you may have thought you had it pegged
some little "friend" would make a fool of you
I finally got home last month, free from an ugly war
but landing at the airport gave me pause
a woman with a little kid called me a nasty name
and spit at me without a hint of cause
This war I did not advocate and never wished to go
I never had a choice in going there
I only wish the people at my home would understand
and put the blame on those who sent us there
I simply cannot understand the hatred aimed at me
for doing what I really thought was right
it seems that people aught to see the reasons why we go
and know that it's our duty makes us fight

Andrew Totten Poem
The couple had a little girl
and she was two years old
a pretty little thing she was
although just getting bold
she loved her parents very much
and let them know each day
she sometimes got in trouble when
she tried new games to play
The threesome went out frequently
to check out happy places
she could not help but notice
a whole world of different faces
the child saw everything as new
and saw it with great pleasure
her parents let her know a lot
that she was their great treasure
All who saw them in their walks
knew they were very happy
her folks would talk about her acts
even though some were sappy
The family took a camping trip
to live as days of yore
Her father thought he knew the best
to eat from country floor
while she slept soundly through the night
her Mom and Dad had died
the mushrooms dad had picked for lunch
were poisonous when fried
When she woke up she wondered why
her mom and dad were still
she yelled and cried till she was hoarse
but could not warm the chill
Her parents played a lot of games
this one she did not know
her mom and dad would not wake up
she had nowhere to go
She cried herself to sleep that night
tired out from all her tears
she felt her hunger growing now
first time in her two years
She did not wander far away
her thirst had made her weak
she did not like ths game at all
some comfort she did seek
They found them there after some days
they did not need to check
the little girl had died as well
her arms round daddys neck

Andrew Totten Poem
Sunday
Football's cool
root for my team
too bad they could not win
end game
Next week
game day starts
excitement builds
I hope they win this week
rose bowl

Andrew Totten Poem
That's not my elephant I am sure
My elephant's much more grey
I know cause Ella told me
the words I had to say
She laughed at my spaghetti
and chuckled at my loss
I'm sure I'll find my elephant
consulting with my boss
A second grader told me
to go and see the sights
I never once imagined
I'd read the bill of rights
but back to the beginning
I'm not sure I was right
it could be that I got it wrong
with elephants first sight
In fact I'm sure that it is mine
It looks like the right grey
so I think that I will leave
and take my elephant away

Andrew Totten Poem
I have a little baby who drives me up the wall
The baby will not listen to any thing at all
It runs around like crazy and messes up the house
I wonder where it is when it is quiet as a mouse
The baby's into everything and is a constant pest
it never seems to know that there is danger in it's quest
The baby makes me worried that it may hurt itself
By getting into unsafe things I've put up on a shelf
The baby got me angry when it broke a lovely dish
and made me mad when I saw that it killed all of my fish
but even at it's worst I don't wish to cause it pain
I want to keep it safe and sound which helps to keep me sane
I think I'll have to teach it that it has to toe the line
before the little devil drives me right out of my mind
I know I have an answer now to keeping baby safe
I'm not sure that it's legal but I must make it behave
I know where baby is now at any time of day
I also know that it is safe and where it has to play
It isn*t in the bedroom, in the kitchen or the hall
I have it in the living room taped up against the wall

Andrew Totten Poem
I've sold you your car so just sign on this line
we'll finalize all that you'll need
A little bit here and a little bit there
Can never be tied in to greed
We want to make sure that your problems are few
for a small fee we will undercoat
I see that you notice the smile on my face
it is not my intention to gloat
I know that you'll want to have air in your tires
and a valve to make sure it will stay
It's one of the things that were doing for you
and it's worth the small price that you'll pay
Because we are nice, you get one extra key
there is no charge I'm sure you can tell
We can't give you a spare, we don't have the room
but your donut will serve you as well
Our cost for these items is covered by you
it won't even come to five grand
this is the way that we always have sold
don't tell me you'll now take a stand
You didn't know this and you didn't know that
stop whining now, you make me sick
your vehicle cost you much more that was said
you act as though it was a trick
The cost on the sticker had nothing to do
with the price that you finally paid
we are in this business to make lots of cash
so next time you won't be dismayed

Andrew Totten Poem
They send you into danger telling you it has to be
And they hope that you'll never be late
It is the best thing that you ever could see
though it never ends good for the bait
you're pushed out in front to be seen by the foe
and just being there doesn't feel great
it's just one of these things that you will need to know
though it never ends good for the bait
Your handlers tell you that you're doing fine
you'll advance soon if you will just wait
just do what they say and keep toeing the line
though it never ends good for the bait
It often feels good to enjoy life in full
and to see what the world has this date
so get out and about and do things that are cool
though it never ends good for the bait
Then go back to doing the things that you do
and cast all of your fortunes to fate
you hope you'll survive all that you are put through
though it never ends good for the bait

Andrew Totten Poem
I wish that I realized the day that I got bitten
that from then on my life would be condemned
I know that my future as the beast is truly written
and will be all I know until the end
The hunger that I feel inside now starts at gibbous moon
and keeps me hunting for the next three days
If I had lots more courage I would eat the silver spoon
or let them catch me somewhere on my ways
The need to hunt is strong in me as though the beast is there
and gets to feed the hunger with a chase
it must be that the animal lurks just beneath the hair
and changes with the moon to show this face
I think I'll have to reconcile the beast within the man
and hope that I can mold the beast a bit
while waiting for the next full moon I'll do whate'er I can
to change the hunger to a better fit
The need is gone for this full moon but sure it will come back
to hunt for blood so fresh and clean and sweet
taste iron flavored morsels offered like an endless snack
I know that soon enough I'll hunt more meat
They say that I'm an animal and should be hunted down
and if they only knew that it was me
I'm sure that it would be the end of terror in the town
and it would be the way to set me free
