THE CRAFT CAN CAPTURE IT

Oh well I got an angry email to begin my day
Because of my last post on the Jabidah thing yesterday
Galit sa akin but greeted me with Assalamu alaykum.
And kung personal Moro friends ko naman ito 
They know I don't criticize Moro leaders
I always leave that to them to criticize their leaders
According to my friends baka nasa gubyerno or something
Next time I'll write na lang about the sea and the palm trees and the beaches 

Pray and pray nalang para walang provocation
ako nga ang daming nag-message sa akin nagalit sa issue ng Sabah standoff
Ikaw pa kaya na wala namanng masama na sinabi dun
Alam mo ‘buti na lang you verbalized that kasi iniisip ko rin ‘yun
I know you have reasons and you know better kaya; I just read your posts
I don’t have to go against parties kasi both have rights
And the issue must be solved

Wala, kasi sa akin kundi independence lamang ang kailangan
May ganyan din kasing realities? 
Minsan you are being asked or expected to take sides
Yes, my side is peace – with peace is independence
Yes, I heard that sa dating Jabidah Massacre celebration
Somebody said that, “Walang kapayapaan kasi walang kalayaan”
And that is very universal, kapatid.

Moro or non-Moro and writing should always geared towards humanity
That’s why for me it “anti-humanity” if you will not listen 
Or suppress when somebody will talk about freedom.
That’s the problem with Filipinos, they don't listen.
Kasi the leaders may sarili ring interests.

How do you see being Filipino?
Ako, it's a cage, Filipino nationalism 
Agenda ng mga oligarchs and landowners 
Filipino nationalism is violence against Muslims and lumads
Kasi ‘pag ako ang tatanunginmo I will never say I am Filipino
Because Tausug it’s not a name but an identity...
I understand but kaunti na lang kayo

Ako sasabihin ko na I am a Filipino but I have reservations
When I was a teenager hindi ako tumatayo ‘pag Lupang Hinirang
ngayon tumatayo na kasi napapaaway ang mga kasama ko sa sinehan
Yes and identity should be critically assessed and examined.
Kaya if they say Filipino ang mga Tausug masakit sa aking loob
But not all, kapatid. try mo pumunta sa Manila
Yung mga Moro na malalapit sa mga institusyon ng Pilipinas
Bakit iba ang Moro at ibang ang Tausug
kaya sila naging Moro at masaya na tawaging Moro 

May identity na naiiba sa Filipino
Pinag-aaralan ko rin yan and ino-observe ‘yung pag-yield sa 'Filipino'
‘Will give Filipinos a disservice
Because it is tantamount to be an accomplice to a corrupt system
And this system is the one that oppresses Muslims
At alam natin ang Tausug di lamang taga-Sulu
Pati Bisayan, Tausug din

As much as possible I am trying to make my writings 'away' 
Away from Filipino nationalism
That's the right way for me and my writing
I will ask first, “How it is to be human?” 
At super last na ang, “How to be a Filipino” 
And the Bangsamoro struggle is the greatest critique to the violence
And failures of Filipino nationalism

Ang problema kasi kaya di successful ang Bangsamoro struggle
Dahil nagdadala sila ng pangalan na di naman originally sa kanila
How come ang pangalan ko ay Abdul sa rights
Gagamitn ko ang Juan para sa aking bayan?
Kaya war of ideas ito and alam mo naman sa akin, ‘pag ideas 
And perspectives walang kompromiso and peace talks 

I do not compromise my language, my craft and myself, my writing
Filipino is an imagined nation, as well as Bangsamoro
Bakit di natin magamit ang orignal nation natin 
Na based sa Sulu archipelago and Mindanao
Yes, actually diyan ako papunta - papunta

Bakit hindi i-Bangsamoro-ized ang buong Filipinas?
It doesn’t mean na i-convert ang Pilipinas 
But the spirit, the struggle it should mean something to Filipinos
It should kasi ang dami na nagbuwis ng buhay
Kaya ko pa na tanggapin kung Maharlika

‘Yan ang gusto kong ma-achieve: Filipinos should listen to Moros
Siyempre marami pang madidiscover along the way
Indeed. Ikaw ba ‘pag sasabahin ko na ‘Tausug’ ano ang maiisip mo?
Tausug is Moro and Moro for me is something that predates 'Filipino'
But now, I would like to know the concept of “Lupah Sug”
I want to know it, I think there are more and beyond Moro on it

Before ‘Moro’ was named to Mindanao and Sulu people
It was first name to Aceh people, Melaka, Brunei and then Manila
Sulu and Mindanao were the last places to have been called the name ‘Moro’
Sulu archipelago was united under the name Sulu archipelago 
The name of people is Tausug. 
Tausug is composed of different ethnics:
Arab, Banjar, Dampuan, Buranun etcetera.
The concept of Sulu as part of dar al islam 
Is already a nation and state 
Where the government is the people and itself headed by sultan or raja

Yes, and I would like to feel this from the ordinary Tausugs when I get there
I would like to experience this from ordinary Tausug and on from place itself.
In the hinterland of Jolo, their laws still on the ground not of Philippine law

I believe in narratives
I want to hear and feel this from the place and from the people.
And then capture it; I have these thoughts 
That Lupah Sug has something that the Moro concept does not have
And it’s a bit metaphysical but sige lang.

I know my craft can capture it.
I think there is a language that can capture it 
And specific craft that can carry its soul
Not fictionalize but put it in a form like a novel or a narrative
Which have their own logic and truths as crafts.

The Mulberry Tree And Its Birds Part Two

By the time Anyone could have spotted its beauty It suddenly changed its colors And became invisible, Before others While hiding behind the leafs And the branches of the Mulberry Alone the bird came over there And alone she flew away Without any friend For some other tree. 10 Suddenly, The sparrows began to chirp Watching a Koyal* sitting Somewhere very close to them On a nearby branch of a tree. But, strangely, for all of them A Neelkanth* also Came over there And opened before them Its beautiful blue color wings. From where the Neelkanth came And for what destination, It would leave no one knows. Before the eyes Could have feasted fully All that, beauties of the Birds And the beauty, All around, the Mulberry tree A Yellow Green bird Came to drink, Water filled in a Pot Which was lying on my terrace, Not very far off From the Mulberry tree. 11 In those moments It seemed to me, As if, someone has opened A treasure Of precious, colorful birds For the tree. 12 The Shahtoot*, Used to play often The Music Of flapping sound, Of its leafs Whenever, the wind blows With, its strengths, While, touching the leafs And shaking its branches While saying slowly In the ears of the Mulberry “Dear Shahtoot – Create Music in the air” So that, we may dance together On the tunes of the wind. 13 And then the Mulberry Began to show Its beautiful dance On the tunes Of the fast blowing winds And watching that dancing beauty Of the Mulberry tree And the beauty Of its dancing leafs, The birds Often used to get filled With an unknown Happiness and joy But, sometimes The dance of the Mulberry tree Causes fear in birds And then they began to make Loud noises like crying To show their fear and anger. 14 But, when they were happy The birds began, to chirp loudly As if, They were greeting, the Mulberry For such a wonderful dance and music. 15 I used to get astonished and lost To see, Such an excellent beauty And grandeur of Nature Which, always reminds me My relations with you, O’ Shahtoot, which is as old, As are the days, of my childhood When we used to play Kilkil Kaantaa* On the lower branches, of your tree And my childhood friends Used to come like birds Searching the chalk lines Made by me, on your branches And cutting them To tell that they have found The treasure, hidden by me. 16 But, I always feel sad O’ my dear friend, Shahtoot That I could not save you From those onslaughts Due to which You just vanished, Suddenly one day For ever and forever. 17 Now, that place Where, the Mulberry used to smile Every Morning and every day Hardly get any birds To listen to, the melodies of Koyal* And the chirping sound And music of Bulbul* and of the sparrows. Even our, kids and children Of today Hardly get, any opportunity To see now colorful birds Flying and sitting On a branch of tree. They almost never see The Neelkanth* flying in the air While showing, it’s gorgeous Beautiful blue wings To tell the story of its birth O’ my dear friend Shahtoot*. 18 But, perhaps This Poem on you, O’ my friend ‘Shahtoot’ Would make you immortal For ever Because, now you would live In the hearts of everyone And you would bloom On the mind and hearts Of little kids and children Who would plant more and more Mulberry trees So that colorful birds may Keep coming on their trees And they may enjoy The beauty of Nature which lies In Plants, Trees, Birds And Animals. TARANA – A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Tarana singing is the outcome of those wonderful feelings of heart, 
which burst from the lips of the singer unknowingly. Tarana comes 
on the lips when the heart is in the swinging mood and the feelings 
of joy and pleasure began to come out in the form of meaningless 
and sometimes meaningful words almost in a similar manner 
in all the languages of the world.

Tarana is an Indian musical form in classical music. It has been the 
most popular form sung all over India. The form often with meaningless 
words has attracted not only the vocalists, but the dancers of kathak* 
and bharatnatyam* of both north and south India respectively. The 
monophonic syllables sung in fast tempo has made it enjoyable from 
a learned to a lay man.

I have placed in my Tarana Song Video (on You Tube), some of my 
Photos  with Hindi Song lines in Roman English as well as its English 
 Text lines to show the mood of the Song, which resembles the 
Photos shown in the Video. I am hopeful that this new experimental 
song even without music would give a new horizon to use this form of 
singing for our English Music lovers.

Patradoot or The Messenger 36 /Many

She must have left the door, dear letter,
After my detention in the police custody,
Keeping in mind to serve my old parents* and,
To continue her support for the freedom struggle.

She has been brought up under the teachings, 
Of cultural education and musical cult, dear letter,
And with affection and love, I have imparted in her,
Rare qualities and craze for the freedom of our motherland.

Great love and affection  and selfless service of others,
Are only some of the qualities, she has defused in her,
Dipped with the qualities of modesty and kindness,
Are the favorite ornaments of my beloved wife, dear letter.

She would run to receive and welcome you, dear,
After receiving the news of your arrival from her child,
Her graceful appearance and her simple beauty,
Would charm your heart beyond words, dear letter.

Decorated with super most elegance, dear,
You will find in her a slumber of love,
Her waist bent with shyness and grace,
Would increase the weight of her elegance.

Beauty and luster of her face, dear letter,
Always increased its shine and loveliness,
And the sweet smile of ever refreshing face,
Used to charm her husband’s heart, dear letter.

Patradoot in Hindi was originally written by my late father 
Dr. Amar Nath Kapoor around 1932, who was a freedom fighter.

He wrote Patradoot in Hindi, when he was kept in Faizabad Jail for quite
a long time. The Epic was written as a gift for my mother and it was
sent to her secretly from Faizabad Jail. He was imprisoned
by the British, as he was fighting for India's freedom 
under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. He was imprisoned 
many times during 1920 to 1947. After India’s
independence as a true follower of Gandhi Dr. Amar Nath 
Kapoor left active politics and devoted rest of his life in 
writing easy mass literature and wrote many Dramas, 
Poetry books, epics. All his other literary 
works were mainly written from 1955 to 1990. 
He left this mortal world in 1994.

These Indian women, who were called salves of man,
And even showed as degraded by the writer publisher Ms. Mayo,
You would see, what courage and bravery they have shown,
You can witness and see from your eyes, dear letter.

You will see them fighting fearlessly, dear letter,
While wearing beautiful saffron color sarees,
As if,  the goddess of courage is giving them strength,
To peacefully face lathe's and beatings on them,

Some where you will witness on your way, dear letter,
How bravely these women are struggling, while bearing,
Tortures and lathe’s in love of their motherland,
They go even to jails without fearing cruealities.

Such was the courage faced by brave and bold Indira,*
The only daughter of Kamla* on Zero Road, dear letter,
When she saved the honor of national flag,
While fearlessly struggling to carry on the procession.

*Kamala …Full name Mrs. Kamla Nehru. The reference is for the mother of Mrs. Indira Gandhi or the late 1st woman Prime Minister of India.. Kamla Nehru wife of Jawaharlal Lal Nehru. She was a great social worker and Freedom fighter. My mother or the writer's ( Dr. Amar Nath Kapoor ) wife to whom the entire Patradoot is dedicated used to go with Late Kamla Nehru,  as her regular companion to awaken the women and men living even in poverty and slums areas of Allahabad

* Indira   or Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The reference is of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, who later on became the Prime Minister of India. She was taking part in the non-violent movement of Mahatma Gandhi, even while she was quite young. Indira Gandhi was also from Allahabad.

Vasava An untold story 1/Many

Vasava
An untold story 


The story as Vasavadutta originally conceived and written by my late father Dr.Amar Nath 
Kapoor*  in Hindi many many years back, but Accidentally the major portion of his hand 
written manuscript got lost with many of his other hand written manuscripts during his 
lifetime itself. He had a deep attachment for this unique story belonging to the period of 
Guam Buddha 559 BC. 
Since I had heard him reciting this story when the manuscript was present I am trying to 
rewrite this unique story, as was wished by my late father. Hope my poetry soup friends 
would find it a unique story portraying a beautiful character of a dancer Vasavadutta or 
Vasava, who was an embodiment of beauty. Her life changed completely when she came to 
see Gautama Buddha.

I am rewriting his idea and story in English and hope to have your both types of comments 
as you find and feel, as it is always precious for me.

Vasava

She was a woman of splendid and unparallel beauty
Lavishly bestowed and blessed on her by Nature
Her intoxicating and lovely youth,  had sparked  
Her beauty and enchanting ness far and wide on Earth

On the beauty of her face and hanging hair locks
Many and mighty had sacrificed and burnt like moths
To see only a glimpse of her dance and to hear her voice
Many lost their entire wealth, only to enjoy her dance

Brahma* had labored hard, while shaping her beauty
Her enchanting eyes use to glitter, like beautiful sapphires
Which were studded in the golden cups of her lovely eyes
Attracting everyone, who came in the closeness of her eyes

During her dance performances, her eyes use to sprinkle 
A passionate intoxicating wine, to charm the audience
Her spectators never appears to stop drinking that wine
To get completely lost themselves in the charms of her dance

When the Earth was in danger 3

When the Earth was in danger     3/8
Prelude   (For Prelude please see part 2)

Then the most beautiful Urvashi* was called, from the heavenly court of Indira*,
To perform a unique dance, before Lord Shiva* who was lost in his Tandava Nritya*,
To calm the heat of his temper, which was burning like lava with in his chest  and
Which was trying to come out, through his dance of destruction to engulf the Earth. 10

Apsara Urvashi* started that day, 
Her unrestrained performance of a beautiful matchless dance, 
So that the inhabitants of this Earth, 
Could be saved from the lava like fire of Tandava* at any cost,
Even the Goddess of the seasons, 
Had spreads its intoxicating wine that day, to make Urvashi’s dance more enchanting.

The season of spring Basant*  had made it more blooming  &  intoxicating,
In every new step, Urvashi was breathing,
All that was only to distract,  the attention of Lord Shiva from his Tandava.11


Urvashi* was freely performing that day,  
Her life’s best and the most elegant dance,
Being an incarnation of beauty she knew, 
It was the last chance to save the Earth, 
From the cosmic fire of Shiva’s Trinetra* or else 
The whole earth will get burnt  with the flow of heated lava, 
Which was generating within His third eye Trinetra*12

To make her dance more appealing and effective, the season of Spring* 
Had defused  the air and atmosphere, with a fragrance and beauty unparallel,
Even the Goddess of Nature the Earth too,  was flowing a unique melody in the air,
The effects of these powerful wines were more intoxicating than the Sura* of heaven,*13

They all including the Gods and Goddesses, at that time were only praying with a wish,
That the beauty of Urvashi and her enchanting dance, with the intoxicating effect of,
Nature’s fragrance and melody flowing in the air, might divert Shiva’s mind and heart,14

Clarifications
*Tandava Nritya* means Dance of destruction
Trinetra*  means The Third Eye of Lord Shiva or which exists in the center of our forehead
Apsara*   Apsaras are beautiful, supernatural women. They are youthful and elegant &
proficient in the art of dancing.
Urvashi*  was one of the most beautiful Apsara of the court of Lord Indira of heaven, as per Hindu mythology  
Lord Indira*  .   Is the  King of Kings. A warrior par excellence. Ruler of the heavens
Dispenser of rain
Basant* is Hindi Sanskrit word for the season of Spring.
Dahra*Hindi word  means earth.
Sura*  The Nectar like wine of heaven

After her melodious first song of the day,
Vasava left the stage to prepare herself, for the most awaited 
First dance of the day, for which she took the theme of,  
Radha’s separation from her beloved Krishna,* 
Enfolding the depths and beauty of Radha’s love, which came out 
So impressively and intensely, when tears started rolling from Vasava’s eyes

Her eyes were shining, like the eyes of an alert deer
Expressing the sadness, with the rolling of tears, resembling 
Radha’s* heart agonies and love for her beloved Krishna*
Which she was portraying before the audience 
Who felt for a moment, as if Radha* actually herself was there,

Adding more cuteness to her charming face, 
She was recollecting, how Krishna’s flute had brought her so close to him 
How listening the melodies of Krishna’s flute, 
Every one in Gokul* became enchanted, to keep on listening his flute
Spectators were now feeling, as if Radha* herself was moving on the stage

Vasava slowly increased, the speed of her dancing steps
While keeping her face expressions, in tune with her speed 
Her body organs too were moving, with her flitting steps, while tuning
Everything with the Cham Cham* of her Payal’s* Noopur*, which were 
Pouring honey in everyone’s ears and squeezing their hearts towards her

* Krishna 	Krishna  is one of the most popular deities in Hinduism. The play of 
                Krishna and the Gopis is regarded in Hinduism as an image of the soul's 
                relationship with God. 
*Gopis 	In the story Krishana spends much of his youth in the company of 
                young cow-herd girls, called Gopis in the village of Vrindavan. Gopi is 
                a Hindi word used for the childhood female friends of Krishna. 
                        
* Radha*	Radha was a Gopi, who is Krishna's supreme beloved with Krishna*,  
                Radha is acknowledged as the Supreme Goddess, for it is said that she 
                controls Krishna with Her love. It is believed that Krishna enchants the 
                world, but Radha enchants even Him.

* Alap	The alap is a totally rhythmless style based upon a free elaboration 
                upon the rag.  It is usually the introductory section.  The alap may vary in 
                length from a few seconds to over an hour.

Radha's Song- A folk Song of India 1/2

Prelude

This folk song is based on the childhood incidents of  8-10 years old Krishna, who use to
please everyone of Gukul village by his loving playfulness.  Gokul is the place where the
divine Krishna was brought up by his foster mother Yashoda about 5000 years back.  

Radha’s  Song-   A folk Song of India  1/2

When the golden rays of Sun peeped,
From behind the hanging dark clouds,
My mind bloomed touching the rays,
As flowers bloom seeing the Sunshine,

O my friend, I came to Punghat*,
To collect water from the   river,
And was about   to dip and fill it,  
In my empty earthen, Gagariya*,

Suddenly   Krishna,*    appeared   there, 
From where,   I do not know,      Sakhi*,
My Gagariaya*,  slipped from my hand,
Even my Chunariaya* also drifted away,

Now, how to go home tell me, my friend,
Without,         the water pot and     water,
From where,     I can get my Chunariaya*,
To cover myself,       before I reach home.

Such  is the magic of Krishna &  his  flute,
They enchants our  mind & heart,    Sakhi,
O, even  I hear,     the melodies of his flute,
When he is nowhere, around me, O Sakhi,

You   also   feel,         as   I  feel,  for  our  dear  Krishna,
Suffering as I suffer, still smiling in our hearts my friend,
Does the melodies,                of his ever enchanting flute,
Lives in your mind and heart,   like me,              O, Sakhi.

Clarifications:
*Radha.   Radha was the childhood friend and was one of the most beloved Gopi of Lord
Krishna. She was the   beauty, power and aura create the ethics of love. None of the
scriptures consists of the power to verbalize her beauty, for it is clear enough that when
beauty of Sri Krishna makes several hearts leave their boundaries, her beauty is so
mesmerizing that it makes Him loose consciousness.
*Krishna.   Krishna is often depicted as an infant or young boy playing a flute as in the
Bhagavata Purana  or as a youthful prince giving direction and guidance as in the Bhagavad
Gita. The stories of Krishna appear across a broad spectrum of Hindu philosophical and
theological traditions.] 
*Gagariya. The earthen pot used still in Indian villages to collect water from river, pond
or wells.
* Chunariya.  A long strip of cloth to cover the beauty of a woman. It normally hangs on
the bosom to cover them.
Punghat.  Is the word used for a place from where water can be collected by village women
of India.
*Sakhi. Hindi word means female friend

Patradoot or The Messenger  2/Many

English version 

Being a prisoner I can bring my beloved,
In my mind through meditation only,
Due to separation from my beloved,  I can sing 
My expressions coming out from my heart,
Before you only, my dear letter.

Background of this Epic 

The Patradoot was written originally by my late father
Dr.Amar Nath Kapoor in 1932. He had joined India’s
Freedom struggle in 1920 on the call of Mahatma Gandhi.
From 1920 till 1947 (India became free in 1947)
my father was in active movement as Congressman & 
Gandhi’s non-violent soldier. For many times he was 
imprisoned for many months and sometime, even for more 
than a year. He dedicated the entire writing work to his 
dear wife, my late mother, who was also a co-partner with 
him in the freedom struggle in creating mass awareness. 

During one such imprisonment at Faizabad jail, he wrote 
this epic and sent it to my mother secretly as a gift for her 
and to get it printed & circulated among the masses to 
create awareness for India’s freedom. The book was 
printed by my mother in Hindi and some of this epic were 
circulated also, but the British confiscated the book and the
press of my father around 1933. I was born in 1950 in a free 
India. I am trying to bring this great writing of my father in 
English which portrays more than the translation of the epic, 
so the world may come to know about this otherwise lost 
and forgotten great great writing and the sacrifices of my 
parents towards India’s freedom struggle.

Dr. Amar Nath Kapoor left active politics after 1947 
and devoted rest of his life in writing easy mass literature 
and wrote many Dramas, Poetry books, epics etc. All his 
other literary works were mainly written from 1955 to 1990. 
He left this mortal world in 1994. Unfortunately many of his
World class works could not be published so far and Patradoot
is one of them.
