I've read many accounts on that horrific war that was WWI ,it was supposed to end all wars. It was trench warfare and men fought and died in hellish conditions. It inspired me to write this fictional verse. The posters said come fight with us and make your country proud Went to town my friends and I to sign on the dotted line I remember the scenes in town, the cheering of the crowd They said t'will soon be over and everything will be fine. Naive were we and believed them and everything they said Some basic training they gave us on how to use a gun It did not help my friends though because now they all lie dead To us this was a big adventure, just a bit of fun. I was assigned to B squad, trench number forty seven And had to stand in mud so deep it came up to my knees Soldiers had put up a sign that said ' shortcut to heaven ' After a while my skin was itching someone said it's flea's . Night time bombardments were the worst and my ears were ringing Often they'd strike lucky and parts of the trench would disappear We'd try to drown out the roars with patriotic singing In the eyes of the boys I was with you could see their fear. Everyday bodies were brought out and placed upon a cart As the stretcher bearers passed we'd think thank god that's not me A gruesome sight I witnessed were those bodies blown apart I could not help but think that from hell those souls were free . In November ninteen eighteen the war was finally over We cried with tears of joy, we were finally going home After a few hours I saw them, the white cliffs of Dover Tears rolled down my face and I vowed never again to roam. Home for me was a struggle and it didn't seem quite real At night I'd have bad nightmares' and I would wake up screaming Often I'd wonder if my mental scars would ever heal My mother she'd rush in and say " son you're only dreaming ". It's been ten years now and the wars still raging in my head And I often ask myself how ever did I survive Nine friends I lost in that war and now they're forever dead Wars are a game of chance, whether you die or stay alive. Written 30th September 2019.

Thank you very much Connie, I'm pleased it got a mention anyway. It was a horrific war, such a waste of life, interesting though the Spanish flu followed soon after, not surprised with all the disease from vermin and corpses. This Chinese virus is worrying too. Tom

Thank you very much Sam, the first world war was horrendous, with atrocious conditions, they were told you'll be home by Christmas, didn't work out though, it dragged on for years. Tom

I see below that you saw the same documentary I saw. I was surprised how the men in those days just "accepted it" like it was almost normal . I think they were a different breed of men from what we are seeing in recent wars.

Thank you Andrea, it was a harrowing documentary really bringing home the horrors of war, and you're so right it was just accepted that men and boys would rush to sign up to fight. But you didn't see many 'desk general's) on the front line. Tom.

You have really captured the distress and horror of war. A lovely way to honour those you fought for us. Very well written Tom :-) x

Thank you Elaine, some of those volunteers were only children, many lying about their age to join up. Tom

Tom, I like your inspired story of the war from a first person view of the trenches. This could've been an accounting from so many from The Sommes to Vimy Ridge. A stark reminder of the war to end all wars. -Richard

Thank you Richard, one of the most horrific wars I've read about. Sadly it didn't end all wars, does mankind ever learn. Tom

It was a horrific war and these young men were sent as fodder - they had no chance, and yet Britain won WW1. I love this poem - my father was in the army in WW11, and told us many stories, one I'll never forget - they were bombed by their own air force in Italy - several soldiers jumped into the tank my father was driving, after the air raid, about 12 -13 people spilled out of it which normally could only take a couple of soldiers! Thank goodness my dad survived! Blessings, Jennifer.

So beautiful is your genuine rendition of the WWI profound scars that affected and ruined soldiers life till their last breath! You have, in a moving way, displayed youth aspirations and disappointment.. A great work of recognition and honour for those who fought in the name of Humanity.. rights and peace.. I salute your profound message in so captivating poetry, Tom.. A FAV.. My warmest wishes and regards. Blessings.

By the time I read about the bodies being carried out, the tears were already flowing, Tom. It is so important that people write about the need to protect our young people. Sending 18-year-olds into battle just seems wrong as sometimes they don't fully understand why they are fighting. So well written that I felt like I was watching a movie. Excellent and a fave! Hugs, Carolyn

Thanks Carolyn, excuse late reply, just got back from Turkey yesterday. You're right ,18 year olds have no knowledge of life, and to them war is just an adventure to them, many are shocked when they see the horror what is war. Hope you're well. Tom

Shades of 'All Quite on the Western Front,' except 'you' didn't die...WW1 was as horrible as they come. ~ Gershon

Tom, good job! Zowie. If evil comes to destroy us, the thinking today is to accept It? I do not mean you said that. You survived because that was God's plan. We kill way more now daily via abortion and we think nothing of them They are disposable?? Evil is accelerating and no country is safe. Not even the children in our bodies. Magnificent poem, My friend Panagiota

Tom this is truly amazing, for you have captured the true horror of WW1 with your imagery as if you really were there. Such unimaginable suffering for mere boys and for those who did return a lifetime of horror each time they slept. A brilliant write Tom. With kindest thoughts Ann xx

this is excellent Tom...i cannot imagine being a young adult and either dying or watching your friends get blown apart in front of you...i have seen people with ptsd, such a shame they have to deal and are treated so poorly when they gave their lives whether they lived or died, they all gave their lives! Great job with this one!

I saw the movie (documentary) about the Brits that were in that war. HOw matter of factly they entered and faced things. Then when it was all over, they were nearly totally ignored. That is just terrible how they went through all that to earn such ingratitude. Good story you wove.

Thank you Andrea, was that the one that was colourised, if so I saw that too. Of course the young boys thought it was just an adventure what a shock to find hell on earth, the vermin, rotting corpses, the stench of death must have been unimaginable. Your right came home and were forgotten . It's only in recent years that their sacrifice has been recognised. Tom

Thank you very much Eve, after reading the history of WW1, I wondered what was going through their minds as they endured hell, hopefully I've managed to put some of their thoughts into this verse. Tom.

A brilliant write, Tom! I've read a lot about WW1 (and other wars as well) and you describe the hell of it all in vivid detail! U.S. Civil War General Sherman said "War is Hell" and he certainly knew what he was talking about! Bob

Thanks very much Bob, glad you enjoyed it. General Sherman was spot on, I totally agree. And of course WW1 went below hell with the nightmare conditions, the volunteers were told you'll be home by Christmas, a big miscalculation for sure. Tom

I will not pretend to understand this need to conquer and kill by world leaders... but they sure use innocent lives to do their bidding...we've not changed since the caveman days...Glad you came out in one piece...
