You Promised
You Promised
On the night of our prom, you pinned roses on my dress and slipped a promise ring on my finger. I looked at you with questioning eyes. You smiled and said,
I promise to marry you.
You kept your promise.
On the night I turned twenty-one, we shared a romantic dinner. Your gift was given on one knee. I looked at you with tears in my eyes. You smiled and said,
I promise to be true.
You kept your promise.
A year later, we stood together to be wed. You took my hand and there were tears in our eyes. You smiled at me, and in your vows you said,
I promise you my heart.
You kept your promise.
Two years later, you were called away to fight in a foreign land. I asked you to promise you'd come back to me. You held me in your arms, smiled at said,
I promise to return.
You kept your promise.
When we were twenty-eight, our hearts were filled with joy. I told you we were going to have a baby. I looked at you, waiting for a reaction. You kissed my lips, then you smiled and said,
I promise to be here for you.
You kept your promise.
When we were old and gray, we rocked on our front porch swing. You always held my hand. I turned to smile at you .......
But ... you promised.
