You Only Have Today
Midnight of reckoning and those ghosts lift up my window
Letting in tomorrow’s wind
Oh, I always knew it would come to this:
All the illusions that helped to lay me down
In a comfort that can’t come from earthly matter
Now scatter through the room
Like snow blown in a blizzard
Then they disappear as if right here
Were giving way
To yesterday’s betrayals one more time
The colors bleed all night to white
And everything regretted
Stands stark and silhouetted
Against the fading light
Of time’s slow-fast progression
Till the one expression of hope I find
Is in the first ray of a sun
That soon will come to say
To me and everyone:
You only have today
