Write What You Know - Expert Advice

Someone decided to give me some advice on the art of writing the other day. He told me that I should only write about things I know. But I’ve lived an uneventful life. I found my soul mate at the ripe old age of 15 and we’re still blissfully married. I’m a veteran, but of no war. I’ve never had to fire my M16 at anything more than a paper target. I’ve always worked in jobs that paid far above what my education should have allowed. I was never molested, abused, abandoned, tortured by terrorists, or lost in the woods to be raised by spotted owls. I come from a very large and very loving family. Sure, I’ve made a few mistakes along the way but nothing that I would look back on with regret. What would I have to write about that might have any significance to the rest of mankind? Then I remembered, Tolkien never lived in Middle earth. Bradbury had never been to Mars. Gene Roddenberry couldn’t have piloted the Enterprise. JK Rowling never attended Hogwarts and Stephanie Meyer didn’t hobnob around with vampires or werewolves. They say they know best If they did, wouldn’t they do it There’s no secret way

I appreciate your perspective, Jerry. I remembering being told to write what I know. I always thought, "what about writing about what I do not yet know" thinking that in the writing I would know. Make sense? You're right. In the end there's no secret way. Write from the heart and soul; we all have something to say. Grateful for your words this morning. Have a pleasant day, Sara 35s

Same to you Sara. I say, if a person is happy with what they write...that's good enough. Have a great evening, myfriend.

I agree, Jerry. Writing is artistic expression. They're many different reasons to write and the reason behind the story, poem or article may be more interesting than the written work of the writer. If you feel something needs to be said for any reason, write on! I enjoy reading your poetry and could care less what anyone else that is an expert has to say about what we should or shouldn't write. :-) Have a great day! Bill

I learned long ago that I can't please everyone. If I'm pleased with my writing, then that is all I can ask for.

Hey Jerry, I loved how you challenged the conventional wisdom that writers should only draw from personal experiences. Your reflection on the richness of imagination and the ability to create worlds beyond our own experiences is empowering and liberating. It shows me that true creativity knows no bounds and that storytelling is a journey of exploration and discovery. Thank you for this insightful perspective!- Blessings, Daniel

Thank you, Daniel, for your wonderful comment. I think that if I were to only write what I know, it would be a very short book.
